⛵️ Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) Update, September 27: Over 42 Ships Depart Greece and Head Straight for Gaza, After Flagship Suffers Complete Engine Failure On Saturday evening, around 10PM, 42 ships of the Global Sumud Flotilla–with vessels from Spain, Tunisia, Italy, and Greece–departed south of Crete from Greek territorial waters, where the coast guard provided protection for the past two nights after recent attacks on the Gaza-bound flotilla. Organizers told Drop Site that a confirmed 532 participants are sailing in the final leg of the journey, which is expected to take five days and span 460 nautical miles. In three days, the ships will enter what organizers call “the orange zone,” the likeliest area for Israeli interception. Given the recent attacks on the flotilla, organizers have prepared the crews to be on high alert as soon as the ships enter international waters–in the next three to four hours. Earlier today, Israel’s Foreign Ministry repeated on X its claim that the humanitarian mission is “all about provocation and serving Hamas.” The GSF Steering Committee told Drop Site that such threats will not deter the mission. At least two Italian naval vessels have pledged to assist in possible rescue missions, and a Spanish naval vessel is expected to join the flotilla tomorrow. The flotilla has suffered setbacks and delays over the past two days due to additional security and safety measures after attacks between Italy and Greece. Its flagship, the Family boat, suffered what organizers described as “catastrophic engine failure” two nights ago. The IDF is working closely with our partners at Ministry of Defense, COGAT and U.S. Central Command, we are preparing to receive a temporary floating pier and to organize the space for receiving humanitarian aid directly, in Gaza. The area of the project covers around 67 acres which are allocated for the operation and the passage of large amounts of goods to the field. The temporary floating pier, through which the humanitarian aid will be transferred, is being built by the U.S. and will be connected to the Gaza shore.

They are moving steadily to meet a confirmed group of 18 civilian ships from Italy at round 7PM. A rescue ship and a ship representing F.lotta—a maritime organization occupying the Mediterranean in support of migrants that calls for freedom of movement against the seawater borders of “fortress Europe”—are both part of the Italian delegation. Both boats passed by the ship Sirius at midday. The Italian rescue mission boat will sail alongside other rescue boats and a legal observer boat named “the Shireen” after prominent Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed by Israel in 2022. These ships will continue to sail behind the flotilla on its way to Gaza while observing for emergency responses. The flotilla is making preparations for stormy weather arriving in a couple of days, when waves will likely reach up to 3 meters. ⛵️ Breaking | The Ship Sirius of the Global Sumud Flotilla Arrives in Tunis — Drop Site’s Alex Colston Reports Since leaving from Menorca after a short technical stop, the majority of the fleet is approaching Tunis and keeping to its itinerary. Three boats have already docked at Tunis, including the flagship Familia Madeira, while 13 other ships are fast approaching the capital of Tunisia. The Ship Sirius, from where Drop Site reports, will arrive to dock at Tunis in about twenty minutes. Over the three-day journey from Menorca, the Sirius crew took the chance to take care of ourselves and each other, while making repairs and improvements to the boat through a fixed schedule of rotating work shifts. This morning, Drop Site was told there would be another short technical stop in Tunis, with a scheduled departure straightaway for Gaza on Wednesday. Climate journalist and Independent MP for Compromís in the Valencian parliament, Juan Bordera, is also onboard and has been facilitating communication between the flotilla’s steering committee and climate scientists and meteorologists, who have warned us that storms will gather over the Mediterranean starting Thursday, endangering the smaller vessels in the flotilla. A decision about traveling amid the difficult weather has yet to be made. Around 50 boats and hundreds of participants, including vessels from Sicily, Italy, will join the ships arriving to Tunis from Barcelona. In Tunis, Nelson Mandela’s grandson Mandla Mandela and French actress Adele Haenel plan to take part in the flotilla as it continues its journey to Gaza. Meanwhile, an independent sailing effort departing from Libya, convened by former Prime Minister Omar al-Hassi, will also set sail at around the same time as the Sumud is leaving from Tunis. Three boats have already docked at Tunis, including the flagship Familia Madeira, while 13 other ships are fast approaching the capital of Tunisia. 🔵 UN Humanitarian Chief told the BBC the number of new malnutrition cases is falling and on average close to the target of around 600 trucks of aid has entered Gaza each day carrying food, medical supplies, and fuel. 📌 Fletcher said: “We don’t get that number every day, but on average over the last few days we are getting in that sort of number of trucks. About half of what we bring in as the United Nations is food. A lot of it is medical supplies and tents. Fuel has been incredibly important… [it] has already made a difference to so many of the projects here that have been without that fuel. A few days ago we got cooking gas in for the first time in months… so we are now, as a result of this ceasefire deal, shifting significantly more aid.” He noted that the “tide is turning” on the starvation crisis in Gaza as more aid enters the territory in the wake of the ceasefire deal but warned “an avalanche of aid over the weeks ahead” is needed to meet the requirements of the population. “We need to go much, much further,” he said.

It's been more than a week since the Israeli terrorist attack against our humanitarian mission of the Freedom Flotilla to break the siege of Gaza and to create a people's humanitarian corridor to prevent more Palestinians to be killed by intentional famine. The Turkish coast guard and local GSF fleet, including the “Family” boat that was attacked by a drone and decommissioned during the mission last fall, sailed out to greet us near where the flotilla will anchor off the coast. The Sumud Flotilla will dock here for the organization to conduct an international assembly—and to hold press conferences and organization-wide briefings—in order to discuss collectively the flotilla’s next steps and publicly agitate for safe passage to Gaza.

🟢Two additional humanitarian aid distribution centers will be established in southern Gaza: Here are the full details:👇 ➡️In the coming days the construction of two additional humanitarian aid and food distribution centers in southern Gaza will be completed thanks to the ongoing efforts that the U.S administration and the American Foundation are leading in the Gaza Strip. ➡️Once the work is completed, a total of five food distribution centers will be operating by Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. The distribution center in the Tel al-Sultan neighborhood will be replaced by the two centers currently being established in the southern Strip, with the aim of improving the response and the safety of distribution. ➡️Since the end of May until now, more than 2.3 million weekly food packages have been distributed to families through the four existing centers. ➡️We will continue to facilitate humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip, while taking every necessary effort to ensure the orderly distribution of food and to prevent the humanitarian aid from reaching Hamas.
