Hon. Vincent Assafuah, MP for Old Tafo, has expressed his disappointment with the NPP, noting that the Ashanti Region has not received adequate support despite its consistent and overwhelming support for the party. He remains optimistic that under the leadership of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as president the party will fulfill its promises. The US has ramped up the ongoing trade war, announcing higher tariffs on Japan and South Korea starting Aug 1. Li Daokui, dean of the Institute for Chinese Economic Practice and Thinking at Tsinghua University, told #ChinaPerspective that China now has a clearer sense of how to handle tariff pressures. With China's strategic importance in global supply chains, including that of rare earth, Li said the country is in a better position to put forward its own demands. "I believe that in the near future, China and the US should be able to reach a new trade agreement that is beneficial to both sides," Li said during the Global Forum of Finance and Economics, part of 2025 ZGC Forum.

This is Elizabeth Economy, former Senior Advisor for China to the Secretary of Commerce in the Biden administration. She admits that she studied the impact of the first Trump tariffs, which Biden kept, and found that tariffs actually harmed the US more than they helped, with two-thirds of industry professionals saying "the tariffs were hurtful" to their businesses. Yet, despite having clear evidence that these policies were damaging, the Biden administration did nothing about it. Why? Because, as she openly admits, there was "a fear that the administration would be attacked for being soft on China." She calls it a "triumph of politics over policy analysis" and a "mistake." She also says that "it's clear" that the new Trump tariffs "have no actual basis in economics and trade relationships", that they "are political gamesmanship", and that they won't "accomplish the bigger objectives." That could be the description of so many actions by the West in general right now: taken despite actively harming their own interests, prioritizing political posturing over the welfare of their own citizens.
