Jony Ive designed the iPhone. The iMac. The MacBook. He asked Steve Jobs to soften his criticism. Jobs: "No. You're just vain. You want people to like you." Jony was furious. Because he knew it was true. He spent 3 minutes explaining what Jobs actually taught him: The first lesson: Focus. "This sounds really simplistic. But it still shocks me how few people actually practice it." "Steve was the most remarkably focused person I've ever met in my life." "Focus is not something you aspire to. It's not something you decide on Monday. 'You know what, I'm going to be focused.'" "It is every minute asking: why are we talking about this? This is what we're working on." "You can achieve so much when you truly focus." The second lesson: What focus actually means. Don’t look to school — whether it’s college or the state-mandated educational system. Don’t look to them to tell you, ‘Here’s what electronics projects you should be working on.’” There’s two reasons Palmer gives aspiring young innovators this advice: 1. “Schools are often years (sometimes decades) behind what industry and hobbyists are actually doing.” 2. “When you’re working on something that you’re only doing for yourself, you’re going to make way better decisions in what you teach yourself and how you do things.” In fact, this is also what he looks for when hiring people at Anduril: “When I hire people at Anduril, I look for people who have done projects that were outside of what their work paid them to do or what their school made them do because that means they’re the type of person who is willing to work on things with their own money and their own time because they want to bring something to this world that wouldn’t have existed otherwise.” Palmer continues: “That’s what drive you to learn the most. Sam Altman on the importance of momentum and why burnout doesn’t come from working too hard “I was told, and I thought for a long time, that you get burned out from working too hard. At least in my own experience, what I’ve found is that burnout actually comes from failing and things not working.” Sam continues: “Momentum is really energizing. The lack of momentum is super draining. And I find that I have infinite energy to work on things that I find interesting and that are working, and almost none to work on things that I either don’t find interesting or aren’t working.” He offers the following advice to startup founders: “I think you see a lot of founders try something and fail, and they assume that they just can’t work hard enough or don’t have enough energy or passion or whatever. There are 2 categories of things in this world: 1) Things that are up to you 2) Things that are not up to you Which category does your reputation sit in? Your reputation is not up to you. I'm the one who associates your reputation with something, not you. You just do things. What's up to you? How you act. Your decisions. Your actions. That is up to you. Your reputation is not up to you. Here's how I know that: You all have a reputation about me and it's not in my control. I get to say and do whatever I say and do up here. I am in control of saying it. I am in control of doing it. The moment words leave my lips, who has control over what is done with those words? You! You are in control of what you think of me. And there's no way everybody in this room is going to think the exact same thing about me. No way. When it comes to exceptional, what we've got to understand is you can spend your whole life trying to avoid criticism and earn reputation, and it still won't be in your control. But when we’re apart, that’s our personal space, and that’s already okay. That alone is enough. 🐻: a [life] tip for someone turning 20? well… this is more of a lifelong tip than specifically for your 20s, but you have to life doing all the things you want! of course we can’t always be only doing the things that we want, but whenever possible, try turning the things you do into what you wanna do or doing the things that are actually aligned with what you like. i think it’d be good to fill in your life with the things you wanna do as much as possible 🐻: would life become more enjoyable once i turn 30? hmm, nope! [now that i think about it,] it wasn’t turning 30 that was important for me. i just happened to find my turning point and felt better in my 30s, but if it’s not the case for you, i think life turns more enjoyable the moment you make up your mind and determination. though it just sounds like a mere mindset difference, isn’t that the hardest part? it’s definitely not easy 🐻: “can you tell me that i’m doing well?”—you’re doing well! but i don’t think me telling you those words is what’s important because won’t it truly be more meaningful if it’s you who lives believing in your own self? i’ve also come to live that way now, though i know that’s something really hard to do… but still, i realised that’s the best way. making even a slight shift to our mindset’s so hard, isn’t it? 🐻: “what should i do if i don’t have confidence?”—keep doing it until you have that confidence or try your best to put aside all the reasons you’re unconfident. you’ll surely gain confidence that way, though of course, support from the people around you helps with confidence boost too. for example, i initially started believing that i might actually be better than how i viewed myself because my days believe in me, but in the long run, i have to be the one building my own confidence up. i think it’s most important that you recognise and validate your own self in the end! 🐻: “i’m afraid of the future”—you can be. i think i’ve said this before, but nothing changes even if we’re afraid. if you’re afraid of something that’s inevitably gonna happen, contemplating about it allows for good preemptive measures instead, but for all those minor worries? i think it’s better to take action after those things do happen, since i heard 90% of the things we worry about won’t actually happen. it’ll be okay, i believe
