Google has solved a 20-year-old web problem.. It's called html-in-canvas, a new experimental Chrome feature that renders live HTML directly as a 3D texture. here's what it does: → draws any DOM element (dashboards, forms, entire app UIs) straight into a canvas → full CSS still works, flexbox, grid,... show more

~15 years ago the Linux desktop went through this kind of phase with compositors. You could do wild useless things, and it was fun.

hell no

Just like how I did it with ‘rocket. new’

You can already render html in an svg and then draw to canvas, works in all popular browsers. Not fast though.

experimental Chrome flag is a ways from 'solved' imo. html2canvas has existed for years, the real wall was always safari and firefox not following. is there anything in the proposal that moves them toward this?

I like the way they arranged the words trying to make it appear a real problem solved. Nobody’s asked for that shit.

This is the one I have been waiting for. Rendering DOM into a texture means you stop rebuilding your whole UI in WebGL just to put a panel inside a 3D scene. What does the input story look like, does the DOM stay interactive in there?

Verdict: very cool demo, but "solved" is marketing. ran its 3 demos myself: a live html form + a 3d-textured cube rendered right into the canvas. catch: flip the flag off and the feature just vanishes. can't ship to real users yet. great for prototypes. follow for more!

Only a vibe coder would say "solved" in such a topic.

Este es mi intento, la malla es la que más me gusta :

This was trending 3 months ago.

A problem for whom exactly? I've been in web dev for almost 30 years, and never wanted this. And when I have had clients, none of them have ever asked for it.

Could this be applied to our curtains?

Turning live UI into simulated fabric is such a weird and cool use case

Nobody cares

why would google want this... like i want this but wtf is google doing with this?

👁️

I fail to see the use of this.

This could finally make interactive 3D interfaces feel native to the web.

This looks like very cool, i want to know that Is it a DOM or Canvas rendered?

This is wild! The internet could look so different soon

In principle, this solution would be excellent for a specific range of tasks, especially for interactive virtual tours, though it's certainly a niche use case.

the hard part is input focus and accessibility once html becomes a canvas texture

Comes with vulnerabilities

This was highlighted in @IvoAI3’s newsletter this morning. Good insights.

Just came across this in @TheUpsideAI, really cool to see.

really cool and smooth!

Instead of treating HTML as a flat plane to bake into a 3D texture, architectures like A-Frame let us use semantic DOM hierarchies as a direct blueprint for native 3D objects. html-in-canvas solves the wild web, but breaking out of the 2D plane gives us a new vocabulary.

This is a massive leap for WebXR and 3D web apps. Historically, overlaying complex 2D UI on WebGL meant painful hacks or heavy performance trade-offs. Native rendering will completely change how we design immersive interfaces.
