Got SDF collision mesh generation (via marching cubes) working with Jolt Physics! The collision mesh is regenerated when the SDF scene changes. Individual SDF primitives can be made "dynamic", which adds them as physics objects. 1/

You can see the collision mesh later in the video. It's much lower res than the resolution used for rendering (and rendering is done via ray-marching a 3D texture rather than triangle meshing). 2/

The video covers it up pretty well, but I'm actually just generating a single collision mesh "chunk" right now - so the obvious next step is to chunkify the whole world and add/remove chunks as the camera moves around. It's cool to see things more interactive! /end

that's so cool, but how do you have sdf objects use this collision mesh while maintaining good performance? if i were to wanna make something with sdf physics, are there resources you'd recommend?

The main cost is regenerating the collision mesh when the (static) SDF scene changes. I think I can get that fast enough, though, as the collision mesh resolution doesn't need to be very high. I'm using Jolt physics and feeding it triangle meshes:

Nice mesh construction. I'm curious though, isn't it more performant and less hassle to use the SDF as the collision object directly?

Maybe, but I'm not aware of straightforward ways to do this for arbitrary SDFs. A big complicating factor is that smooth blends (as well as subtractions) make the distance field a bound rather than exact, which means it becomes a lot harder to compute overlaps.

Did you try Surface Nets? I believe they are faster to generate but also have lower quality

what is the compute cost? nice job!

Very cool stuff mate! I wish this kind of work was more readily available to developers to create more interactive worlds. Is this something you're planning to release in some form or another?

SDF commander Mazloum Abdi told Aryen TV, a PJAK-affiliated outlet (PJAK is the PKK’s Iranian offshoot), that the SDF does not want to join or integrate into the current HTS-led army, but instead seeks a merger to jointly build a new “national army.” “We’re not saying we will join them. We want to jointly build a Syrian army. The SDF is a large force; in size, we are comparable to the Damascus army. So we need to build a new defence force for Syria together, and the SDF should have a special and distinct role within it,” Abdi said. We have reported this point before: the SDF is framing its position as a merger to create a new army, not absorption into the existing force. From our September report: “What is new now, as the SDF and Syrian government enter more serious negotiations about the SDF’s future and Syria’s governance, is that the SDF appears to be putting forward an alternative proposal to keeping its own unified bloc. Rather than integrating the SDF, estimated to be a 100,000-strong force, into the currently forming HTS-led army, their new proposal—put forward by Sipan Hamo, long a shadowy figure who led the YPG, the SDF’s backbone, but was kept out of the spotlight due to Turkish sensitivities—suggests the two should merge on equal footing to build a joint military council as a first step toward rebuilding “a new national army that includes all Syrians and is based on a comprehensive democratic project.” This proposal reflects a strategic shift. The SDF is no longer merely resisting absorption into Damascus’s structures; it is now engaging Damascus on its own terms. By framing the discussion around a merger rather than integration, the SDF is effectively saying: if the government does not want parallel armies, then it must negotiate the terms of a joint force, one in which the SDF would become a coequal pillar of a newly reconstituted Syrian army. In this scenario, the SDF positions itself not just as a faction to be dissolved, but as a central partner in shaping and ruling the new Syria.”

[NeurIPS '24] DreamMesh4D: Video-to-4D Generation with Sparse-Controlled Gaussian-Mesh Hybrid Representation Abstract (excerpt) We introduce DreamMesh4D, a novel framework that combines mesh representation with sparse-controlled deformation technique to generate high-quality 4D object from a monocular video. To overcome the limitation of classical texture representation, we bind Gaussian splats to the surface of the triangular mesh for differentiable optimization of both the texture and mesh vertices. In particular, DreamMesh4D begins with a coarse mesh provided by a single image based 3D generation method. Sparse points are then uniformly sampled across the surface of the mesh, and are used to build a deformation graph to drive the motion of the 3D object for the sake of computational efficiency and providing additional constraint. For each step, transformations of sparse control points are predicted using a deformation network, and the mesh vertices as well as the bound surface Gaussians are deformed via a geometric skinning algorithm. The skinning algorithm is a hybrid approach combining LBS (linear blending skinning) and DQS (dual-quaternion skinning), mitigating drawbacks associated with both approaches. The static surface Gaussians and mesh vertices as well as the dynamic deformation network are learned via reference view photometric loss, score distillation loss as well as other regularization losses in a two-stage manner. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms prior video-to-4D generation methods in terms of rendering quality and spatial-temporal consistency.

The latest on the SDF’s integration into the Syrian state: Just hours after SDF commander Mazloum Abdi’s meeting with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, the full US withdrawal from Syria was announced as complete. One notable detail is that Qasrak airbase, the site vacated by the final American forces, lies on the strategic M4 highway and inside the Hasakah zone that remained under SDF control after the final integration agreement was sealed. Yet based on videos that emerged after the US withdrawal, the base appears to have been handed over to HTS-led elements of the Syrian Army’s 60th Division, which the SDF is set to join. The footage shows dozens of Turkish-made BMC vehicles entering the base to deploy there. More importantly, when the US left, the SDF’s anti-terror unit, known as YAT, appeared to be waiting to hand the base over to the Syrian Army, indicating clear coordination and suggesting that implementation of the integration deal is progressing relatively smoothly. It is also notable that both Qasrak and, a month earlier, Rmelan airbase appear to have been handed over to HTS-led brigades known to operate Turkish-made weaponry. These two bases matter because Qasrak overlooks the M4, while Rmelan sits beside the strategically important Rmelan oilfields. Both are located inside the zone that remained under SDF control after the cessation of hostilities at the end of January. The Syrian government is also set to take over all prisons in Hasakah, while the courts are to be transferred to Damascus-linked institutions. Damascus-linked officials involved in the integration process have said this could happen as soon as next week. At the same time, the SDF appears to be receiving more positions within the Syrian government than initially expected, with the SDF bloc emerging as an important pillar of governance. Its role is set to extend beyond the defence and interior ministries to the foreign ministry, justice ministry, and other state institutions. Meanwhile, the SDF is transitioning into politics following its formal dissolution as a separate armed entity, with strong indications that Mazloum Abdi himself may move into a political role. This also appears to fit into the PKK’s broader rebranding across the Middle East and its effort to better align its political entities across the region, from Turkey to Syria and beyond. That process now appears to include a push for new cross-border media platforms aimed at strengthening coordination as these movements become more embedded in governance in Syria and, potentially, Turkey, while also aligning more closely with the PUK sphere in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region. The broader direction points toward a reconfigured cross-border political force emerging from the PKK’s transition in Turkey, where it has moved toward laying down arms and repositioning itself as a political actor. Please understand this agreement as an official declaration of the general understanding; a >Memorandum< And just in general: Jolani 'Ahmad Al Sharaa' has ascended to the throne of Syria for just 3 months. 3 months in and he ethnically cleansed a minority (Alawites) and sees his rule challenged by Iran - while Israel is further strengthening their position in southern Syria. So much can happen within the span of a few days and a year has 365 days. Let’s wait and see what will happen and how things are being implemented or if they are being implemented at all. Talks can collapse at any time. And with all that: Please think about why this happened today just 1 day after the horrifying events at the Syrian Coast by the Syrian government Forces - Jolani probably made major concessions to the SDF in these negotiations and the general outlook on the details of the future-agreement. Jolanis position in Syria has been majorly weakened, Druze in southern Syria outright reject him now fearing that Jolani will ethnically cleanse them next. International community also applies major pressure on him resulting from his actions at the Syrian coast. Jolani now needs the SDF to reappear as the good guy again and he had to act now before the international community starts to further back the SDF and alienate Jolani; which is why I believe that Jolani had to make concessions and that the SDF used this to their advantage. Also: Nothing in this statement suggests that the AANES will cease to exist next week or in the near future - it will be a very slow implementation of what has been agreed upon. After details have been agreed upon of course. And first will be the return of Kurdish IDPs to Afrin, which the SDF will carefully observe. Then the very slow integration of the Kurdish neighbourhoods in Aleppo into the Syrian Government which the SDF will carefully observe and only then can there be any though of integrating the AANES into the Syrian Government. And why do people assume that the SDF or YPG will be disarmed? Where did you read it in the statement? Kurdish cities and neighbourhoods will of course and obviously be protected by Kurdish forces - take an Arab city as an example and you’ll see that the local police force and military is recruited from the local residents; it will be the same way in a Kurdish city/neighbourhood. and so will be the officers and commanders. The Peshmerga are also part of the Iraqi federal government’s military. And if anyone disagrees, you are free to pick up an AK47 and lead a war yourself. Understand: The AANES and Rojava, like any Government or governmental institution is focused on protecting and caring for its residents. We don’t even know the details, yet some are jumping into conclusions saying that the Kurds have lost. As if the officials from the SDF (YPG/J) who have risked their lives everyday for the past 13 years would ever agree to terms that would put Kurdish lives at risk..
