China is our adversary. They are building more power than we are, and then using it to power data centers to advance both economic interests and of course military as well. “BACKWARDS AND POOR”: TRUMP’S MESSAGE TO TOWNS THAT REJECT DATA CENTERS President Trump says communities that reject data centers are choosing to be “backward and poor.” He calls them the “golden goose” and argues China “could not be happier” to see Americans push back against the AI buildout. The message is clear: stop asking questions. Accept the data centers in your community, or you are helping Beijing win. But public opposition is growing across party lines. Communities are raising concerns about water use, power demand, land, and the local cost of a massive AI infrastructure boom. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick says those concerns are foreign propaganda. “Data centers don’t use water,” he claims. That is a major reversal from Lutnick’s own position last year, when he acknowledged that data centers “suck water.” Now, anyone who says the same is accused of repeating enemy propaganda. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimated that U.S. data centers directly consumed roughly 17 billion gallons of water in 2023, before the current AI buildout accelerated.
