I’m relieved that #yyccc made the right decision this morning by rejecting an irresponsible motion that could have jeopardized public safety. Some members of Council and the mayor have pushed an agenda to take $8 million out of the Calgary Police Service’s budget and shift it under City Administration through the Community Safety Investment Framework. This move would have undermined the oversight and effectiveness of critical funding meant to address crisis intervention and community safety. The police budget, as originally proposed, was already balanced and strategic. To attempt to strip oversight from the police and move funds elsewhere was not only short-sighted but reckless. I’m glad to see Council recognized the flaws in this motion and voted it down. I will not stand with those who fail to support our critical frontline services. I know they're going to try to spin the narrative differently. Just look at the voting records to know the truth. I’ll continue to advocate for fiscal responsibility and public safety, ensuring that essential services like the police are properly equipped to protect Calgarians.

How do we revitalize downtown? By investing in public safety, small business, and the arts. Today, I'm announcing a proposal to realize that vision through the Theater Arts District. Over 1 million visitors come to the mid market neighborhood to visit our theaters - Warfield, Golden Gate, Orpheum, ACT Strand, and Bill Graham. That brings in potentially over $1.3 billion in economic impact to our city every year. To boost this economic engine, my office and Public Works, Rec Park, and Mid Market Foundation developed a proposal for a public realm enhancement which will include: - Art filled crosswalks and murals inspired by plays and musicals - Interactive lighting and digital displays to brighten the corridor - Street performances and small business activations to bring energy and foot traffic These enhancements will build on ongoing public safety and small business investments. SFPD has increased foot patrols at key intersections on the corridor and our Drug Market Agency Coordination Center is now operating 24/7. The Office of Economic and Workforce Development is expanding its Storefront Opportunity grant to provide $50K - $100K in funding to open new small businesses in the Mid Market corridor. Combined, the Theater Art District proposal can help drive potentially $100 million in economic impact via just a 10% increase in shows at the theaters. The proposal will be funded by private philanthropy and we hope to kick off the pilot in 2026-2027. Five New Cyber Police Stations for Pune With cybercrime steadily rising in the city, I reiterated my earlier demand from the previous session to establish five new cyber police stations in Pune. I urged the Home Department to expedite action on this proposal. Expanded CCTV Network and Advanced Technology I also called for the immediate rollout of 10,000 new CCTV cameras across Pune and urged the Government to announce the state’s comprehensive CCTV policy at the earliest. Additionally, I proposed integrating criminal databases with CCTV networks through face recognition technology, enabling real-time alerts to cyber cells when suspects are detected and significantly improving crime prevention and investigation. Upgrading the Aundh Veterinary Hospital Currently, the Aundh Veterinary Hospital provides only OPD services. I requested the Animal Husbandry Department to expedite the tender process for establishing a multispeciality veterinary treatment centre with modern facilities, and to fill vacant posts at the hospital at the earliest. They don't even have money to get cars repaired” “hat's all according to Jeff Hawkins, the president of the Arizona State Troopers Association, who told me the department needs $4.75 million without that money. He says squads in Phoenix are running with very few men, which means response times are up. He also says rural areas are also seeing less enforcement. He is calling on the governor and state legislature to provide that funding” “There have been at least two bills that have gone through Governor Hobbs vetoing” Their total budget for 2026 is approximately $405–410 million in appropriated funds, plus tens of millions more in non-appropriated and federal funds, bringing the total to roughly $500 million Over 400 trooper positions remain unfilled, forcing existing staff to work more overtime. Moreover, intelligent beings could retaliate and harm us after we engage in an offensive act. The wise response to unrecognized visitors is to first figure out their intent and capabilities. This can be done passively by collecting data about them.

We are launching a 90-day Drone as First Responder (DFR) trial to evaluate how remotely piloted drones can support emergency response & public safety. ℹ️ The trial will assess the effectiveness of drones in improving situational awareness, supporting operational decision-making & enhancing public & officer safety. Beginning Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026, 2 Skydio X10 drones will be deployed to select incidents in northeast & southeast Calgary. The drones will provide responding members with real-time aerial information to help them better understand unfolding incidents & determine the most appropriate response. 💬 “The Drone as First Responder model has been successfully implemented by other police agencies & has shown potential to enhance emergency response. This trial will help us determine how the technology can support public safety in Calgary by providing responding officers with valuable information about an incident, often before they arrive on scene.” — Supt. Jodi Gach of the CPS Operational Support Division. The drones are deployed from a secure location in northeast Calgary. When an eligible call for service is identified, a sworn CPS member trained as a drone pilot can remotely deploy a drone to the scene. In some cases, the drone may arrive before responding officers, providing an early view of the incident that can help members identify risks, locate individuals & make informed operational decisions. While we have used drones for several years to support public safety operations, including emergency incidents, searches & investigations, DFR introduces a new deployment model that allows drones to respond directly to select calls for service & provide information during the early stages of an incident. ℹ️ The use of drones for the trial has been approved by Transport Canada.
