I’m relieved that #yyccc made the right decision this morning by rejecting an irresponsible motion that could have jeopardized public safety. Some members of Council and the mayor have pushed an agenda to take $8 million out of the Calgary Police Service’s budget and shift it under City Administration through the Community Safety Investment Framework. This move would have undermined the oversight and effectiveness of critical funding meant to address crisis intervention and community safety. The police budget, as originally proposed, was already balanced and strategic. To attempt to strip oversight from the police and move funds elsewhere was not only short-sighted but reckless. I’m glad to see Council recognized the flaws in this motion and voted it down. I will not stand with those who fail to support our critical frontline services. I know they're going to try to spin the narrative differently. Just look at the voting records to know the truth. I’ll continue to advocate for fiscal responsibility and public safety, ensuring that essential services like the police are properly equipped to protect Calgarians.

How do we revitalize downtown? By investing in public safety, small business, and the arts. Today, I'm announcing a proposal to realize that vision through the Theater Arts District. Over 1 million visitors come to the mid market neighborhood to visit our theaters - Warfield, Golden Gate, Orpheum, ACT Strand, and Bill Graham. That brings in potentially over $1.3 billion in economic impact to our city every year. To boost this economic engine, my office and Public Works, Rec Park, and Mid Market Foundation developed a proposal for a public realm enhancement which will include: - Art filled crosswalks and murals inspired by plays and musicals - Interactive lighting and digital displays to brighten the corridor - Street performances and small business activations to bring energy and foot traffic These enhancements will build on ongoing public safety and small business investments. SFPD has increased foot patrols at key intersections on the corridor and our Drug Market Agency Coordination Center is now operating 24/7. The Office of Economic and Workforce Development is expanding its Storefront Opportunity grant to provide $50K - $100K in funding to open new small businesses in the Mid Market corridor. Combined, the Theater Art District proposal can help drive potentially $100 million in economic impact via just a 10% increase in shows at the theaters. The proposal will be funded by private philanthropy and we hope to kick off the pilot in 2026-2027. Expanded CCTV Network and Advanced Technology I also called for the immediate rollout of 10,000 new CCTV cameras across Pune and urged the Government to announce the state’s comprehensive CCTV policy at the earliest. Additionally, I proposed integrating criminal databases with CCTV networks through face recognition technology, enabling real-time alerts to cyber cells when suspects are detected and significantly improving crime prevention and investigation. Upgrading the Aundh Veterinary Hospital Currently, the Aundh Veterinary Hospital provides only OPD services. Last night, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office DFR (Drone as First Responder) pilots used RapidSOS live 911 monitoring to launch one of our unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as a drone, in response to a report of a suspicious person in the backyard of a residence in Sparks. The drone was airborne and on scene within three minutes of the call being broadcast to patrol deputies. Once overhead, DFR pilots began canvassing the area and relaying real-time information to responding deputies. Using thermal imaging in low-light conditions, the drone successfully located the suspect in the backyard of a nearby residence on Cromwell Place. Pilots continued to provide live updates on the suspect’s location and behavior, allowing deputies to safely detain the individual without incident. Further investigation revealed the suspect, identified as Ryan Davis, 38, had forcibly entered a residence and moved through multiple neighboring backyards prior to being located. Davis was arrested and transported to the Washoe County Detention Facility, where he was booked on a felony charge of home invasion and an additional charge of trespassing. This incident highlights the outstanding coordination between patrol deputies and our DFR pilots, demonstrating how advanced aerial technology is not used for routine surveillance or to monitor lawful activity. DFRs are deployed for specific, time-limited public safety purposes—their use allows deputies to gain real-time situational awareness before making contact, often reducing the need for force and lowering risk to both the public and responding officers. This technology helps deputies make informed decisions, slow situations down, and choose safer resolutions whenever possible.
