He attended classes and football practices for weeks before anyone figured it out. Rep. Elliott Engen is now leading the effort to make sure this never happens again. His Securing Our Schools package would close the loopholes that allowed this to occur by requiring schools to verify age and identity immediately, creating penalties for fraudulent enrollment, and directing the Minnesota Department of Education to track these cases statewide. Under current law, schools only “may” ask for documentation. Engen’s proposal changes that to “must.” One word that makes all the difference. A Minneapolis homeless advocacy group opposes the bill changes, claiming that it would “creates barriers.” That argument is reckless and dangerous. There is nothing compassionate about policies that put students at risk or allow adults to exploit the system. Engen’s plan is common sense. It protects students while ensuring that truly homeless kids can still attend school safely. Democrats and their activist allies are once again choosing ideology over safety and allowing another dangerous situation to unfold in Minnesota classrooms. Minnesota students deserve to be safe.
