This lady is trying to explain millennial teaching to her retired teacher mom. It shows the absurdity of today’s teaching and why this does NOT work when old school teaching did. We made lots of mistakes with the No Child Left Behind Act from the Bush administration, everyone gets a trophy, to allowing liberal woke mindset to take over the classrooms. I'm not sure how to fix it but we could start with stopping the nonsense allowed in schools.

I love this teaching time with UCLA Women's Basketball . This is a warm-up footwork/shooting pocket drill that we did with Gabs & CLW this week. They start when they hear the ball bounce. Working on locating the ball, getting their feet/balance under the ball, & getting to shooting pocket from awkward places (like bad passes in a game). Hope it spurs on your creativity. #GrowOurGame #DoTheWork #intentionalLearning

The “Ozzie Drill.” In 1998, I was watching an interview on ESPN with Ozzie Smith, and he talked about his favorite drill…one that he uses to “improve, polish, and trust his glove instincts.” in the drill, Ozzie got on his knees and had a coach “Pepper” him from a short distance, and he had to let his hands work freely to pick or press the short hop or short in-between hop. No thinking … just trust. Get the brain out of the way. Because thinking is slow. I stayed awake at night thinking of ways I could modify this drill to work when working with a group of infielders. It hit me in the middle of one night. Woke up from a dead sleep of a way that we could make the drill very predictable and simplified. Once the foundation of the drill was built and mastered, I could grow the drill and make it unpredictable and much more challenging. ***The video below is a culmination of 26 years of teaching this drill. My son, Taber, grew up doing this drill as a little boy, HS player and college player. This video is him executing the Ozzie drill on his knees and feet when he was playing SS for UNCW. Game Speed Layups With The Kentucky Drill Layups can make or break a game. The problem is that in practice sometimes players don’t go full speed when doing their layups. This drill from The Buzz Half Court Trapping Defense from coach Kevin Furtado fixes that. The goal is 27 layups in one minute. Bar hop How It’s Done Start on one side of the stick with two targets at 7-10 yards and 1 yard apart. On the beep, engage the target directly in front of you with two shots, then engage the second target with two shots. Step over the stick and reengage the first target with two shots, and then the second target with two shots again. This drill is 8 shots total, with four on each target. Why It’s Done This drill is a great way to introduce movement into your training. If you're used to static shooting, this drill would be a great one to start with. It may be just one step, but getting your feet to do what they’re supposed to while shooting is harder than it looks. This drill also includes a couple of transitions, which will easily get you some Charlies and Deltas if you’re not careful. Things to Remember The goal is to make it sound like you're shooting one target. What I mean by that is you should try to shorten the time between targets and make the flow as smooth as possible. When you start and when you finish, be sure to check your stance. You don’t want to end up off balance. Bending your knees will help soften your movement. As always, make sure you are looking at a small spot and not just the whole target. It’s one of my favorite drill to do so give it a try! Thanks sis for the drill suggestion! Hannah

5 Baseline Out Of Bounds Plays That Get Buckets! This video goes beyond lines on a page. It will give you the key teaching points that lead to game-time execution. These plays come from state champion high school and veteran college coaches across the country. If you’re coaching pitchers, this adjustment from Gerrit Cole is worth paying attention to. He went to an overhead glove during rehab. His feedback was simple. It felt good. He liked the rhythm. It helped things line up. That matters. If you look across his career, you can see his hands working up with the leg lift. That’s a pattern you’ll see a lot with more vertical pitchers in how they use their hands. Now it just shows up a little differently. For some pitchers, that upward movement helps everything sync up. But it’s not something you just give to everyone. A more horizontal mover might still like it, but they usually have to adjust other pieces to make it work. It’s not about the move. It’s about whether it actually fits how the pitcher organizes movement.

Let me state up front that these two plays were NOT the reason St. John's lost yesterday. And I am a numbers guy so no need to tell me about our shooting stats in the game. But I need to vent. We knew Arkansas over their prior 8 games was making a concerted effort to get to the free throw line - they averaged 26.5 free throws over this 8 game period. In the 10 games prior to this 8 game period, Arkansas averaged 19.3 free throws attempts per game - right in line with D1 average per game. The coaching staff gave a clear direction to our players prior to the game - wall up with your hands in the air and maintain verticality. I am including two clips here of just that in which the Arkansas player initiated contact, Zuby and Kadary went straight up with their hands in the air, and Arkansas was rewarded with two trips to the free throw line. In the first clip, St. John's had a 4 point lead with 2 minutes to go in the first half with momentum as Arkansas hadn't made a field goal in 3 minutes. Zuby does exactly what he was instructed when Boogie Fland initiated contact and the baseline ref who is 6 feet away from the action does not blow his whistle, but another ref does award Boogie Fland two free throws. That started a 7-0 run for Arkansas and they went into the half with a 3 point lead. I can't provide enough words on the second clip on just how unjust it was to have a late whistle call on Kadary going straight up in the air and getting his fifth foul called on him with 6:28 to play. Kadary was limited to just 16 minutes of play in the entire game because of foul trouble. And as a reminder, I will end this post with how I started it.
