great quote from karpathy most great organizations require leader(s) with a disproportionate amount of power when this is absent you end up with countless hierarchies of ineffective committees, e.g. many google products lack a Directly Responsible Individual with actual power

who was responsible for managing google's gemini release so poorly? it doesn't seem to be sundar; he wasn't even in the room the core gemini ML team is great and it wasn't their fault either in the absence of leadership some tried to step up, but lacked the power to execute

Reminds me of Amazon's single threaded leader concept: the most senior person who is full time responsible for the success of X. If the importance of X isn't matched by experience & clout of its single threaded leader, you have a problem

google has always had a flatter hierarchical structure—it was praised for this in the early days: it attracted smart, talented people who wanted autonomy and not micromanagement the problem is this approach doesn't scale, and became counterproductive as a company grew

True only when involvement with that organization in voluntary, whether as member/employee, customer/client, vendor/supplier, or investor/owner. And the leader must be absolutely secure in their position, otherwise time and attention is devoted to preserving their power, and this tendency infects the entire hierarchy. Committees are a method to diffuse responsibility and deflect blame, so very effective at preserving one's place in an organization.
