Our first headline show in London. We had no idea if anyone would know the songs. We had no idea how many people would show up. We had no idea what we were walking into. Rich kids and poor kids now grow up in separate Americas. If you go back to 1960, 95% of children in the U.S. were raised by two married parents, regardless of social class—rich kids and poor kids alike. Fast forward to 2005, and for upper and upper-middle-class families, that number dropped only slightly, from 95% to about 85%. So in those households, the vast majority of kids were still raised by two married parents. For working-class and poor families, it was a different story. In 1960, 95% of kids had two married parents. By 2005, that had plummeted to around 30%. And that’s exactly what I saw growing up. I was a kid in 2005, and in the neighborhoods around me, intact families were rare. I had five close friends. None of us were raised by two married parents. I was in foster homes. Two friends were raised by single moms. Another by a single dad. Another by his grandmother because his mom was on drugs and his dad was in prison. That’s a pretty common picture of working-class families in America now—a lot of family breakdown.

Meg & I aren’t big on tattoos, so we were a little nervous when Marek & Rosa first told us they were getting them. But what they came home with made us cry (well, me anyway). What we most wanted as parents was to give our kids a home where they felt safe & able to be themselves. For the past three decades, I’ve worked to stop evictions & build affordable housing, so more parents around here could do that. My #1 goal in Congress will be to make it possible for everyone.

I spent my whole life learning the art of songwriting from my mom, an iconic songwriter herself, so when Animal came out, it was a culmination of the sounds of growing up, the sounds of falling in love, heartbreak, the sounds of coming of age, and I had no idea what these songs would open up for me and what kind of life I would be creating for myself just by putting these songs out in the world. I'm so happy I did, and so happy you've connected to it the way that you have, and continue to do so. 15 years later, TiK ToK had its biggest steaming day just a few days ago. Just goes to show that we all go through these same pivotal feelings and emotions growing up. I'm so happy to have grown up with all of you. Happy anniversary Animal. I had no idea you were that bitch. But turns out you totally are.
