Pangolins are one of the most unusual and mysterious mammals in the world. They’re the only mammals fully covered in protective keratin scales, which they use as armor when threatened, they curl into a tight ball that’s nearly impossible for predators to penetrate. Despite their armored look, pangolins are gentle and shy, feeding almost exclusively on ants and termites, which they collect using incredibly long, sticky tongues that can be longer than their own bodies in some species. They have no teeth, so instead of chewing, they rely on a muscular stomach and swallow small stones to help grind food internally. There are eight species of pangolins four in Africa and four in Asia ranging from ground-dwelling to tree-climbing species. Some pangolins can release a foul-smelling chemical from glands near the anus, similar to a skunk, to deter predators. Tragically, pangolins are the most heavily trafficked mammals in the world, targeted for their meat and scales, despite the fact that the scales have no proven medicinal value. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect these elusive, deeply endangered creatures.
