Lastly: just the way he presents himself. Whether it’s the hand—is there something happening with that hand? Is there an IV there that they’re trying to cover up? His response to somebody fainting in the Oval Office really conveyed that — he was slow to respond, and that slowness and fatigue you’re seeing more and more in his public events. If Iran shows that it will follow international humanitarian law in the treatment of this pilot, should they should they seize him, that would be a very strong statement that we ought to we ought to always follow rules, especially with respect to survivors of attacks like this.

Yeah, that would make sense. That would actually be entirely appropriate to do. And that’s a secondary diagnostic — a secondary screening tool. If there’s early detection of something, that would make sense: that he is high-risk for something, or they already know he has a condition, maybe a neurologic issue, and they’re monitoring it. That would make complete sense.

But the reason that so many things are wrong with our economic picture is that so many things are wrong with our political system. And we’ve gotten so used to it, we can forget that there was a time when our political system was the pride of this nation. Wars have been fought for our system, starting with the first one—the one that launched 250 years ago with the Declaration of Independence, the one that gave this nation its being. The Founders risked their lives for a better political system. So don’t tell me it can’t stir people’s hearts. Don’t tell me that it’s not worth fighting for. Especially because until we do something to change our political system, we will continue to suffer from an economic system that lets us down: monopolies squeezing families and farmers on both ends; consumers and workers caught up in a system that can’t serve them; small businesses swamped by the big guys. Right now, what’s at stake is nothing less than the American dream. It is endangered.
