The problem with St. George is, we all paid for the benefits seen on the south side of Baton Rouge. Due to a consolidated form of government and inequity in leadership, I can give specific examples of the disparity. In 2005 we approved a tax plan for roads in Baton Rouge. We spent $800 million on new roads. The historically Black parts of north Baton Rouge got $46 million of that money over the 15 years they designed new streets. Including Perkins, Burbank, and Pecue Lane. Give us our portion of the money we spent on those roads back. If they want to start a new mostly white city, and show how hateful and racist they truly are, that doesn’t bother me. I’ll be damned if you’re going to take our money to build it. So the position now is to protect every penny for the city, because if they want their own they should build it. They will have to raise taxes to afford their plan, racism is going to cost them… My position is always going to be to protect the interests of my community. They had no problem creating a 70% white city, so I have no problem fighting for the interests of the majority Black city. This isn’t a social studies project on civics, although our Mayor leads us to believe it is. This budget and the major impacts it has and will continue to have for years are real-life issues that affect not just the communities in my ward but the entire City. I commend my colleagues, those who aren’t beholden to the Mayor and his special interest groups, who took the time to put aside differences for the good of the City and voted NO on this budget. Our coalition of common-sense leaders wasn’t about "what’s in it for my community," but rather, "what’s in the best interest of the taxpayers of the City of Chicago?" The 2025 Budget vote will surely have lasting consequences. I want residents of the 15th Ward and the City of Chicago to know that I fought and will continue to fight for what is in your best interest, the taxpayer!
