Introducing the ghost bird or ‘Potoo’ - a group of birds related to the nightjars and frogmouths. They are sometimes called poor-me-ones, after their haunting calls.

These are frogmouths, undeniably cute. They are now officially undeniably likeable, because a new paper in i-Perception Journal collected 20,000 pictures of birds on Instagram & corresponding data about likes to determine the “most liked bird” there. The frogmouth was the winner.

Nature knowledge: This Large Frogmouth baby emerges from underneath its parent for the very first time since its birth, seemingly all cheery to witness its surroundings! 😀 The Large Frogmouth (Batrachostomus auritus) is a species of bird found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. It is named after its broad, frog-like mouth. This species is considerably larger than other members of its genus and grows to a length of about 42 cm (17 in). Being a nocturnal bird, it hunts by night, on the ground and in the canopy, feeding on insects such as grasshoppers and cicadas. During the day, it roosts, perched on a branch or hidden in a hole, single or possibly in pairs.

Did You Know that even though they have nocturnal habits and an owl-like appearance, tawny frogmouths aren't owls? They're more closely related to nightjars!

When someone tells you tawny frogmouths aren't their favourite bird. 😲 In 2021, German researchers found the tawny frogmouth was the most “Instagrammable” bird. So even if they didn't win this year's #BirdOfTheYear, they sure are loved.

This Parasite Leaves a Praying Mantis the Moment It Touches Water Horsehair worms are parasites that take over insects like crickets and praying mantises to grow inside their body and release chemicals that affect the insect’s brain. These chemicals make the insect seek out water and jump in. Once the insect is in the water and drowns, the worm escapes into the water to continue its life cycle. There, it can find a mate and lay eggs, starting the whole process again with new insects.

One of the coolest creature on this earth that I have ever come across. Love that tree stump texture camouflage. Truely looks like nature's glitch.
