🖨️ It took over a year and lots of help from Claude Code but I have now been able to create a real dot matrix printer on the web that prints from Windows 3.11 in your browser: Here's the test page: I couldn't get the LPT1 port to work but COM2 did work (the dial up model already uses COM1), the JS receives the COM2 serial data (just raw print data) and then prints it Next is to make the dot matrix printer better looking (kinda 3d like on pieter dot com) and have the paper also flowing in 3d out of the printer and integrate it on the page My idea was that it might work because we also capture the COM1 data (from the dial up modem) and send it to a Websocket as a dial up connection, so we should be able to capture the COM2 traffic too but I didn't know how, but now I do IT WORKS!! 😊

Small progress today on pieter (dot) com live now: Got a full BIOS working, and it runs the basic MS-DOS commands like EDIT and FORMAT, and added an old CRT screen around it for effect I tried to Format C: my drive and it literally does nuke itself 😂 Also added Jazz Jackrabbit for 🥨 Richard, but the idea is not just old games, we wanna have a real PC running on my site with mIRC and Netscape Navigator being able to open pieter(dot)com within itself! Update on networking: It seems JS-DOS only support IPX networking, which is nice for multiplayer games, but we need TCP/IP networking for it, for now I will try to get: - Netscape working - put the Pieter(dot)com HTML in a file and open that as the start page

My favorite way of interacting with Claude Code is to have it generate static HTML files as outputs (reports, explorations, code structure, mockups etc.) I wanted to iterate on the file by commenting in browser and having Claude update the output live. So, I built this Claude Skill👇 How it works: - Install Claude Code skill (ask it to clone repo) - Build an HTML page for anything (e.g. research coding agents and generate HTML report) - Ask it to make the page interactive That's it. CC will launch a localhost server and allow you to then leave comments on the page itself and once it updates, will give you a tour of changes. It's like Google Docs kind of comments/iteration but for HTML pages.

💾 Okay I finally bought a Raspberry Pi 5 to make into a real retro computer as a proof of concept I love the Raspberry Pi much more than my ESP32 simply because I can SSH into it and it's just like a normal computer or server, the ESP32 required specific software to re-flash it everytime and it was TEDIOUS!!!! I need a fast feedback loop to develop with so all this flashing is too slow for me The Raspberry Pi 5 instead just runs Linux which then runs DOSBox-X to run Windows 3.11 install live downloaded from there so it stays fresh I then also got a Checkmate 19" IPS Retro Monitor by Stephen Jones (very indie and Kickstarter-style product) which is like a vintage retro PC monitor but with an OLED and it runs at 1280x1024, and the Raspberry Pi 5 has HDMI out so it works perfectly with it Then I got an 8BitDo retro IBM keyboard, but the spacebar broke, so I gotta send it back and get a new one, but it was great while it worked, so it's not in this video, and I got the 8BitDo retro mouse So altogether it's a proof of concept of a real vintage retro PC with internet and it works now My end goal is to make this into production and SELL it, not for money but more for fun because I think it should exist, just like Palmer Luckey's ModRetro Chromatic Gameboy-remake I'd go with something smaller than this 19" checkmate display though, it's great but too big for the Windows 3.11 era I think, more like 14" with a matching sized retro IBM-style keyboard and Windows 3.11 preinstalled (if legally allowed by Satya Nadella) with WiFi working out of the box We could also go with Windows 98/XP, because for me too Windows 3.11 was a very short time, so I too have vague memories of it, most of my computing memories is Windows 98/XP etc. Inside it could simply run on a Raspberry Pi 5 like here, which is easily powerful enough to run all of these OS'es I see many SF founders with Apple II's in their living room, and I guess cause Apple was more popular there back then, but in the rest of the world we were mostly IBM PCs and clones that ran Windows, so it's cool to have that as one retro object working with internet in your living room Anyway, step by step, we're here now 😊

✨ Made a new mini feature on Photo AI: [ Grab from 3d model ] So the problem is we're at that stage in time (typical for AI) where image-to-3d models are not good enough but are fun to play with, but we know they'll be good enough in 1-2 years With [ Make 3d model ] you already can turn any Photo AI pic into a 3d model but it still looks hyper clunky and deformed, but it works! One cool idea I had to make that more useful and made now: Let people make a 3d model then change the view of the it with the 3d viewer, then press [ o ] and it grabs a frame of the 3d That image you can then [ Remix ] (img2img), and it becomes a real photo again and that in turn you can then turn into a video again with [ Make video ] So that essentially gives you a fully freeform camera position control to take photos with One thing I need to fix is the background/skybox, I kinda need to take the original photo and remove the person and just get the background for the 3d model viewer, in this case it should be white, but it's a start!

Apple Maps 3d is insanely impressive now (see video below) Google on the other hand decided to build an insanely clunky solution to display 3d maps to avoid using mobile GPUs: A Google server streams (!) a live video of its 3d rendered map to you, the result is a disastrous: a super laggy and clunky 3d view full of video compression artefacts with a response time of 2-3 seconds for every movement And I know WHY they built that, someone felt it was not inclusive to only have 3d maps that are high performing on iOS because Apple's GPUs are insanely fast and can deal with it (as you can see below in Apple Maps) but they wanted to support inferior phones, I get it But then they also decided to worsen the experience for iOS users who could easily run 3d natively on its GPU It's just an insane product decision, there's no way to cut it: they could have super smooth 3d like Apple Maps but neutered it with a clunky live stream Even more insane because Google does have native 3d on iOS in a completely different app that nobody uses: Google Earth Is 3d important? Wife and I were discussing backyard renovations today, but a hard time visualizing things to scale. So I wanted to see if I can turn a simple iPhone video of my backyard into a walkable 3D model with a chat to generate any asset on the fly using LLMs. Used Matt Shumer's gauntlet loop to one shot this (worked so well). Feels like playing The Sims with my own house. Can only imagine an app where contractors can just take a video of a space and instantly give a 3D demo of designs for customers, but with better graphics. Surely this has been made? So cool
