Structural racism by the Dominican Republic against Haiti is deeply rooted despite the two countries sharing an island, a history of anti-colonial struggle, and both having Black-majority populations. During the current crisis, the DR is deporting Haitians while allowing the US and others to use their country as a landing base for those being evacuated from Haiti. We spoke to Professor Jemima Pierre of Columbia University and activist with Black Alliance for Peace about this dark history of colonial division.
