How the Ancient Greek knew earth was round.. Carl Sagan explains how the Ancient Greeks knew the Earth was round and calculated its circumference over 2,000 vears ago... By around 500 BC, most ancient Greeks believed that Earth was round, not flat. But they had no idea how big the planet is until about 240 BC, when Eratosthenes devised a clever method of estimating its circumference. It was around 500 BC, that Pythagoras first proposed a spherical Earth, mainly on aesthetic grounds rather than on any physical evidence. Like many Greeks, he believed the sphere was most perfect shape. Possibly first to propose a spherical Earth based on actual physical evidence was Aristotle (384-322 BC), who listed several arguments for a spherical Earth: ships disappear hull first when they sail over the horizon, Earth casts a round shadow on the moon during a lunar eclipse and different constellations are visible at different latitudes. Around this time Greek philosophers had begun to believe the world could be explained by natural processes rather than invoking the gods, and early astronomers began making physical measurements, in part to better predict the seasons. The first person to determine the size of Earth was Eratosthenes of Cyrene, who produced a surprisingly good measurement using a simple scheme that combined geometrical calculations with physical observations. Eratosthenes was born around 276 BC, in region now known as Shahhat, Libya. He studied in Athens at the Lyceum. Around 240 BC, King Ptolemy III of Alexandria appointed him chief librarian of library of Alexandria. Known as one of foremost scholars of time, Eratosthenes produced impressive works in astronomy, mathematics, geography, philosophy, and poetry. His contemporaries gave him the nickname “Beta” because he was very good, though not quite first-rate, in all these areas of scholarship. Eratosthenes was especially proud of his solution to the problem of doubling a cube, and is now well known for developing sieve of Eratosthenes, a method of finding prime numbers. Eratosthenes’ most famous accomplishment is his measurement of the circumference of Earth. He recorded details of this measurement in a manuscript that is now lost, but his technique has been described by other Greek historians and writers. Eratosthenes was fascinated with geography and planned to make a map of entire world. He realized he needed to know the size of Earth. Obviously, one couldn’t walk all the way around to figure it out. Eratosthenes had heard from travelers about a well in Syene (now Aswan, Egypt) with an interesting property: at noon on the summer solstice, which occurs about June 21 every year, sun illuminated the entire bottom of this well, without casting any shadows, indicating that sun was directly overhead. Eratosthenes then measured the angle of a shadow cast by a stick at noon on the summer solstice in Alexandria, and found it made an angle of about 7.2 degrees, or about 1/50 of a complete circle. He realized that if he knew distance from Alexandria to Syene, he could easily calculate the circumference of Earth. But in those days it was extremely difficult to determine distance with any accuracy. Some distances between cities were measured by time it took a camel caravan to travel from one city to other. But camels have a tendency to wander and to walk at varying speeds. So Eratosthenes hired bematists, professional surveyors trained to walk with equal length steps. They found that Syene lies about 5000 stadia from Alexandria. Eratosthenes then used this to calculate circumference of Earth to be about 250,000 stadia. Modern scholars disagree about the length of stadium used by Eratosthenes. Values between 500 and about 600 feet have been suggested, putting Eratosthenes’ calculated circumference between about 24,000 miles and about 29,000 miles. They have been engulfed in power and arrogance of power taken over so much that, they somehow believe in their delusions, that, Ghana was sold to them and they are the only ones who ever won an elections in Ghana. But they can’t run away from the real and serious issues for too long. No matter how evasive they remain, we would always come back to discuss the real and Serious issues. Nurses and teachers who were promised automatic postings are still at home with no assurances. About 35,000 young Ghanaians have been made unemployed under 12 months. Whiles inflation and cedi improves, they cancel it out with increase in utility tariffs by about 28% which affects production and ultimately passed unto consumers They artificially manipulate our currency, creating instability and inconsistencies to enable businesses plan and that explains why consumers are not feeling the impact Galamsey was a major campaign topic, they made specific promises of what they would do to deal with Galamsey. Today, Galamsey has worsened, NDC officials and government officials are accused by several citizens on their involvement in Galamsey. Our water bodies in 12 months are being destroyed at an unprecedented rate. They promised 24 hours economy and yet cannot show how they would even implement this. Two budgets gone, two more left for their tenure to end and there’s no glimpse of how public sector institutions would start the 1-3-3 shift system as they promised. The entire 12months has been a period of tyanny, showmanship, polical power abuse, political persecution, destruction of state institutions, attack on the media and CSOs. And when you ask them to sit back, slow down, reflect and refocus on the core mandate, they shout in your face “….. Mahama is Hoooooooo 🎶 🎶 “ Ghana is surely in a REVERSE and not a Reset. I just hit 100k subscribers on YouTube and I'm stoked. Which is why I've decided to give this whole content creation thing a real shot. Starting today, I am going to stream consistently on Twitch and regularly upload to my channel. A little back story on how I got here. Before I created content I suffered from clinical depression after having my thyroid removed due to cancer. I would escape by watching streams and gaming videos to relax. One day I decided to just give it a shot. So I hooked up my computer and talked into a very cheap mic and started streaming. It went terribly, but honestly... I was thrilled. Then I took some of that footage and edited it down like I did with skate videos to some random song that reminded me of a model runway. Took forever to get done on my free time. I got one encouraging comment... And I was absolutely thrilled. These days I get comments from people who tell me what they're struggling through and how my videos helped them forget about it for an hour. And every time that happens, I'm reminded of why I do this. To pay back for all the times I was entertained when I was having a hard time. It seems so dumb, but man... I can't tell you what a stupid little video or silly stream can do for someone having a really hard time. I'm not sure if this is going to work... But I'm going to give it a try. Even if I fail, I'm not going to stop creating. I got exciting plans for the future but this is the first step. Where it takes me... I'm not sure. I hope you all come along. Regardless. Thanks to all of you for supporting me and helping me out. I never thought I'd hit 100k or have any type of following. Not in a million years. I am grateful and appreciative. Here's to what comes next I guess. Tea is life. ☕️

A-B-C-D-E-F-G ... This famous sequence of letters known to much of the world dates back to 16th Century BC. A fairly small group of traders and merchants known as the Phoenicians created the foundation for the modern English alphabet and other alphabets. They organized a system of 22 consonants into what became the alphabet used not only by English speakers, but by speakers of many of the world's languages. The Phoenicians lived along the Mediterranean coast in what is now Lebanon. They inhabited a number of different city-states, the most famous of which were Tyre, Byblos, and Sidon. These Phoenician places were often in conflict with each other for domination of the region. Because of this lack of cooperation, the Phoenicians were conquered and forced to pay tribute to the virtually every empire in the region, including the Egyptians, Hittites, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Greeks. When the Phoenicians created their new alphabet, they worked from symbols that were already in use among the Semitic-speaking peoples of Canaan and Mesopotamia. As early as 3000 BC, Sumerians and Egyptians had already invented writing systems based on symbols. These early scripts were primarily used by merchants and traders to record contracts, receipts, and lists of goods. The merchants and traders of Phoenicia wanted something that would not be too difficult to learn and would be quick and easy to use. Unfortunately, both the Egyptian and Sumerian writing systems did not meet these criteria very well. They used hundreds of different complex symbols to represent ideas (ideograms) and syllabic sounds (phonograms). The Phoenicians realized that most words were made up of only a small number of simple sounds. They found that these sounds could be represented in only 22 symbols and their various combinations. In their newly created alphabet, the Phoenicians used symbols or letters only for consonants, although their spoken language did contain vowel sounds. The modern Hebrew and Arabic alphabets, which were directly influenced by Phoenician one, still do not contain symbols for vowels. The Phoenicians spread their alphabet through their vast trading network that stretched throughout the entire Mediterranean region. The Greeks adopted it and by the 8th Century BC had added vowels. Later, the Romans also used a version of this same alphabet that is virtually identical to the one used today in the English-speaking world. As children, one of the first things we learn is the alphabet. This is an important thing to learn, since our entire written language is based around the combinations of letters in the alphabet. Every letter represents a sound in the spoken language, which lets us create words through combinations of sounds. This system is much more efficient than a written language in which each symbol represents an entire word, so it's pretty cool. But where did it come from? The alphabet, as we know it, developed over thousands of years, but originated from written language known as Phoenician. Phoenician alphabet was one of the first widely used alphabets in the world. Maybe our children should be singing catchy mnemonic tunes about this alphabet as well. To understand the Phoenician alphabet, we first need to understand the Phoenician people. For that, we have to travel back to roughly 1500 BC on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea around present day Lebanon, Syria and Israel. This territory was known to the Egyptians as Put, to people of eastern Mediterranean as Canaan, and to ancient Greeks as Phoenicia. Lena and Pheem aren’t the same person #ลีน่าหมิว #LenaMiu 🦋: there’s a series with N’Miu, called ‘Pls Love’. This will be our second series for the both of us. The characters are very different from the first series, so it’s a big challenge. 🎤: how is it going to be this time? 🦋: in this series, I’ll be a sharp-tongued/foul-mouthed person, not just a little but quite intense, like sassy/fiesty in a LenaMiu version, that sort of vibe. 🎤: earlier it was said she’s (pheem) was a red flag? 🦋: the ultimate red flag. Never felt I had to play such a red flag character, but in that red flag, every character has their own reasons for why they think that way and why their actions are like that, and the story will lead the viewers to eventually understand. 🎤: usually, when you’re with Miu you’re all cutesy/playful but once you’ve got to be in a lot a conflict (cause the role is heavy with conflict), how is it? 🦋: I separate them, so in the series, it’s a series and in real life, it’s real life – in real life, we’re LenaMiu who are close with one another, a relationship like this. But when we’re the characters in the series, Khun Pheem and Nong Pan, it might be a different vibe. It’s just a challenge for actors/actresses who are close with one another – like how do we act to make the viewers believe that the character isn’t LenaMiu? 🎤: is it difficult to play/be a super red flag character? 🦋: is it hard? It’s quite enjoyable! Honestly, I’m not scared of anything, but I fear not being able to go to the market… I’m afraid that when I meet the fans, they might hate me 😭, but I believe everyone understands. 🎤: it seems like you enjoy it with– 🦋: I’ve played as someone with a sharp tongue before, and I felt like it was something that was completely out of my usual boundaries (new territory, outside the box). Because before, I used to play a character that was well-behaved. But when I get to play as someone with a sharp tongue and sassy, there’s like a challenge where I have to do my homework with why this character is like this and why they have to say this phrase? But in them being sharp-tongued, they are actually sensitive. 🎤: sharp-tongued but kind at heart (tough but kind) 🦋: yes, something like that. 🎤: so for the fans who’ve just recently followed how will they be able to handle it? you might have played this before– 🦋: I suggest the fans who hasn’t seen the first series 🎤: go back and watch it first? 🦋: no, not to go back and watch it first, but what I mean is when watching the second series, please try to look back at the reality of Lenamiu, that we’re both really soft. Don’t believe that this character is Lena, it’s not. It’s just a character. The character and me are two completely different people.

WHEN THE PRIME MINISTER "DISAPPEARS" THE mRNA INJURED IN NEW ZEALAND... Right now you're probably doing the last of your Christmas shopping. Maybe even spending Christmas day in an overcrowded A and E, with a thumping heart and a doctor insisting it's only "anxiety". Maybe you don't even believe these people exist. I want to share you with a post that our former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, posted on Facebook in September 2021. It was a couple of months before she MANDATED the Pfizer mRNA for around half of all working New Zealanders. She asked our country to share their "side effects" from the Pfizer mRNA (almost exclusively used in NZ). The post exploded with tens of thousands of heart breaking comments of serious injury and death. Jacinda's social media team were deleting them within seconds of being posted.....but we also had a team watching the post and screen shotting everything we could grab before deletion. We captured thousands of comments which were then deleted in front of our eyes. Here are the stories of just 200 of the 1000's of New Zealanders made "invisible" by our former kind and empathic PM. Roman architecture is at centre of Europe’s visual allure. Sophisticated Roman structures have survived hundreds of centuries without renovation... In 103 AD Roman engineer Apollodorus of Damascus built a 1.1km bridge from stone and wood. Trajan’s Bridge was 19m from surface of river, 15m wide and capable of supporting the weight of hundreds of traversing Roman soldiers. It was only a few feet shorter than Sydney harbour bridge. Romans built a lot of West’s longest standing buildings. They were also the first civilisation to make bridges from concrete. Some of these ancient bridges stand now as they did day they were built. This is thanks to the structural innovations that were first used by Romans. And innovations that eventually helped shape contemporary bridge engineering. Alcántara Bridge is such a bridge, standing in Spain since 104 AD. Roman civil engineer Caius Julius Lacer was the man behind the bridge. His tomb stands nearby, with an epitaph that reads “I leave a bridge forever in the centuries of the world”. He wasn’t wrong. There is a rumour doing the rounds on web that Roman engineers in charge of building bridges had to stand beneath them as scaffolding was removed. Apparently, trepidation of tonnes of rock and debris falling and crushing you lead to some pretty tight structural planning. A more likely history is found in Roman Empire’s military expansion. To improve Roman access lines the empire formed guilds of skilled workers and thinkers who shared ideas and building principles. These early engineering guilds made important discoveries in structural design, in the materials and in the piers that supported the legs of the bridges. Romans had improved traditional footbridge by creating a bridge that maintained its structural integrity through the centre. To achieve this the Romans did not rely on steel beams running through the stone members, but instead on the tensile strength of the stones themselves. The shape of the arch allowed the bricks to be inserted at a curved angle until they joined at the peak of the arch with a keystone. This keystone was shaped as a trapezoid that used the weight of the stone and concrete in the bridge to compress the tapered stones together. This pressure formed a structure in the arch that required a tremendous amount of force to rupture. Where traditional bridges were at their weakest in the centre, the arch was at its strongest. Arch was a structural innovation in building design. But it wasn’t only thing Roman Empire contributed to construction. Romans were also unique in the materials they chose to build with. A natural cement called pozzolana was used by Romans as mortar for piers (legs) of their bridges. Not only is this cement said to be ecologically cleaner than today’s cement mixtures, but its also a cement that grows stronger over time. Pozzolana is still used in some countries. It’s made by combining two parts pozzolana (which is a type of slag that forms naturally from volcanic rock) with one part powdered lime. As early as 3rd Century BC, Romans used pozzolana instead of sand in concrete in their construction. This gave their structures supreme strength and stability. As not every bridge built by Romans had luxury of building its piers on land, Romans used cofferdams where the piers would fall within a body of water. Romans used cofferdam as temporary structure that allowed construction of a bridge pier in a space of water. Cofferdams that were used by Romans were simpler than ones used in contemporary construction, but their function is identical. First, Romans would dig a ring of timber logs into river bed. They would then fill gaps between logs with clay for waterproofing, before pumping water from inside circle of logs. Upon newly dry riverbed, Romans would construct pozzolana and stone piers. 250703 hanjin wv live 💬: pls recommend me the way to learn korean quickly! 🐰: i don’t think my korean is that good yet, but if i had to recommend a way to learn it quickly, i’d say… 🐰: i actually had a lot of korean lessons before debuting. so while i was learning with a teacher, i just kept going; studying, doing homework, recording my voice and listening back to it. all of that helped me a lot. but after debut, my schedule got really busy, so i didn’t have as much time to take lessons as i used to 🐰: but i couldn’t just sit around and do nothing if my korean skills were stuck, right? so i found my own way, by learning through the members. since all the other members are korean, i kept talking with them. and through those conversations, i started to learn things i hadn’t known before. when i said something, they’d correct my pronunciation, word choice, or grammar, which helped me remember it better. so i think if you keep talking to your friends in korean, you’ll improve quickly! 🐰: also, there’s this thing… korean intonation? (t/n: he wasn’t sure of the word so he searched it in chinese) compared to chinese, korean intonation is more flat or like this ➖➖➖ 🐰: back then, when i spoke korean, i was still used to chinese intonation, which goes up and down more. so when i spoke korean, it’d sound like, “hello~ i’m hanjin~!” (↗️↘️↗️) with a rising and falling tone. that made it obvious to people that i was just learning korean. and it was actually the members who pointed that out to me, so little by little, i started learning how to use the correct korean intonation 🐰: so i think you need to pay attention to a few key things: pronunciation, and especially for people like me who come from a language with very different intonation, intonation itself is really important. also, remembering lots of vocabulary and grammar is essential. those four things are important! but above all, the best way is just to keep using the language, just speak it! that way, you’ll figure out which parts you need to focus on more
