I feel like the mind *must* be doing exactly this with our perception everything we see is a real time hallucination the only thing that is missing is the layer of error correction that somehow matches expectation (the hallucination) with reality (sense data)

Demis Hassabis says hallucination isn't always a bug. It can be a tool for creativity. To solve hard problems with AlphaEvolve, DeepMind forced the models to hallucinate. Most ideas were nonsense but some turned out to be useful. "You can substitute the word hallucination for imagination at that point. They're obviously two sides of the same coin."
