Congratulations! Fingers crossed for @googlefonts funding to add Nsibidi itself, and other African indigenous writing as well.

@googlefonts Hopefully that comes soon, long term goal for Agụ Display is to add Nsibidi symbols once they’re supported by Unicode.

New short course: Collaborative Writing and Coding with OpenAI Canvas! Explore new ways to write and code with OpenAI Canvas, a user-friendly interface that allows you to brainstorm, draft, and refine text and code in collaboration with ChatGPT. In the short course, created with OpenAI, and taught by , a research lead at OpenAI, you’ll learn to use Canvas to enhance your workflows. Canvas lets you go beyond simple chat interactions. It provides a side-by-side workspace where you and ChatGPT can edit and refine text or code collaboratively. This makes brainstorming, drafting, and iterating as you write feel more natural and effective. As the first major update to ChatGPT’s visual interface since its launch in 2022, Canvas gives a new, innovative approach to collaboration with AI. For instance, after writing the first version of your code, Canvas can review it and give suggestions for improvement. It can also help with debugging by adding logging, identifying problems to fix, and writing comments. In addition, you'll also learn what it takes to train the model for an interface like Canvas. In this video-only short course, you’ll: - Learn how to ask for in-line feedback and control the iteration of your work by directly editing selected areas of your text or code from the model’s output. - Learn how to access quick automation tools in a shortcut menu that allows you to modify your writing tone and length, enhance your code, and restore previous versions of your work. - Learn how to use Canvas as a research assistant tool with an example of asking the model to reason through the screenshot of a plot to write a research report, in which you can ask questions within the created report. - Ask the model to write Python code to replicate the graph seen on a screenshot image. - Go behind the scenes of how you can create a video game, such as Space Battleship, from scratch, edit it, and display it in one self-contained HTML file. - Get a real-world application example of creating a SQL database from the image of its architecture. - Understand the model training and design processes that power Canvas! Today I had the privilege of hosting the launch of one of the best pieces of railway design that I’ve seen in years. We launched the new British Railway Clock at London Bridge: and it is beautiful. It is elegant, graceful, simple and clear. It is a symbol of unity and of precision, with impeccable design heritage and subtle modernity. Created by Design Bridge and Partners and finely tuned by experts including two of Network Rail’s superb in-house railway architects, it is the result of international competition, run by Network Rail, the Design Museum and Royal Institute of British Architects. It is so good that when I first saw the prototype in motion, I actually cried. I often have horology on the mind, you see. This digital display matches the data feeds online and in stations, giving clarity and rapid understanding. The iconic double arrows logo – gently, calmly, and almost mesmerizingly, separates and glides around the dial every minute, with a little flourish - on the hour. Digital is crucial here: it matches the other timepieces you see in a station or app environment, and is easier to comprehend in a split moment than a full analogue face. That’s sensible. I understand that there is another version which can be used on platforms too, with seconds counted rather than just indicated. Gerry Barney, designer of the double arrows, has endorsed it: Margaret Calvert, signage and font designer extraordinaire has been a judge on this and I met her today: she loves this clock. Several other stations are launching this on display boards too. An android phone AND watch version is in development too – Apple is a bit more complex to work with - and merch from the Design Museum is on sale in a pop up shop in LBG station until Friday afternoon. It’s about time that we had something this good.

"Carol Vorderman MBE formally comes to the end of her 10 year commission after becoming the first female Honorary Group Captain and Ambassador for the RAF Air Cadets in its history in 2014." After a properly lovely chat and a cuppa with Chief of Air Staff Sir Rich Knighton and his immensely kind words last week, I'm a very happy woman. I've been formally involved in RAF Air Cadets and other aspects of RAF life for 10 years which has gone like the wind (no pilot pun intended). I am a pilot with a degree in Engineering, and have been a huge supporter of STEM & young people and education all of my life & I felt I could help as the first female Ambassador for RAF Air Cadets. Both of my children were cadets and Katie spent 4 years in RAF Air Squadron when she was at Cambridge. It’s been a wonderful 10 years and every moment spent with our Cadets & the incredible volunteers who run it at squadron level has been special, from being on camp with them at RIAT Royal International Air Tattoo to witnessing the incredible Musical abilities of so many young bands, from Space Camp, and them lining the red carpet and being on stage with me at the Pride of Britain Awards, to taking them to America to celebrate the F-35’s early days with Lockheed Martin. The 1 Group Carol Vorderman Award was created for the person within 1 Group who has voluntarily provided exemplary work for the Air Cadets each year and I felt hugely honoured for that. Thank you Air Cadets for some wonderful memories. I wish you all the very best for the future. But my association doesn't end here. I've worked with RAF Charities for almost 20 years including helping to raise money for the Bomber Command Memorial in Green Park. Hosting the Salute Area on the day of the memorial’s unveiling was an extraordinary honour. Here's to a vibrant future. Just a TINY number of happy pics from over the years.

This is evergreen! When a young boy asks John MacArthur why didn’t Jesus just *Pow* in the garden when Eve ate the apple, He can stop it like that? Bible Questions and Answers, Part 70 — John MacArthur “I’m Joey Cusenza, and my question is, why didn’t Jesus stop Eve at the garden of Eden when she ate the fruit? *Like, I mean, pow,* He can just stop it like that. Why didn’t He?” JOHN: That is the most profound question of all questions: Why didn’t God stop Eve from eating the fruit? This theologians call the problem of theodicy: Why is there evil in the world? If God is absolutely holy, why is there evil in the world? That’s essentially that question: Why didn’t He stop it before it started? First of all, the broad answer is this: because God allowed her to eat that fruit, God allowed sin to come into the world, so that He could be glorified. Now God is a God of love, and He could express that love even in the perfection of the Trinity. And He expressed that love to Adam and Eve when He walked and talked with them before they sinned and before she ate. So God could express His love. But if there had never been a sin, there would never be forgiveness, there would never be mercy, there would never be grace, there would never be compassion, there would never be healing, there would never be restoration. And so, forever and ever, the angels would never be able to worship God for all those aspects of His nature. So God allows evil so that He can display grace and mercy and compassion because those also are attributes of God that can only be put on display through His response to sin. There’s another reason, and that is that God is holy and just and righteous. He would never be able to display ultimately what that means unless there were sinners to judge. So whether it is judgment on sin or whether it is salvation from sin, the fact that sin exists allows God to display eternally the glory of the full scope of His attributes. Okay? Great question. Thank you, bud.

Over 1.5 million Muslim pilgrims are performing Hajj this year. When Malcolm X (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz) performed Hajj in 1964, he wrote “Letters from Mecca.” This is one of those letters: Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and the overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as practiced by people of all colors and races here in this Ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all other prophets of the Holy Scriptures. For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by people of all colors. I have been blessed to visit the Holy City of Mecca. I have made my seven circuits around the Ka’ba, led by a young Mutawaf named Muhammad. I drank water from the well of Zem Zem. I ran seven times back and forth between the hills of Mt. Al-Safa and Al-Marwah. I have prayed in the ancient city of Mina, and I have prayed on Mt. Arafat. There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blonds to black skin Africans. But we were all participating in the same rituals, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had lead me to believe never could exist between the white and non-white. America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem. Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have met, talked to, and even eaten with people who in America would have considered ‘white’, but the ‘white’ attitude was removed from their minds by the religion of Islam. I have never before seen sincere and true brotherhood practiced by all colors together, irrespective of their color. You may be shocked by these words coming from me. But on this pilgrimage, what I have seen, and experienced, has forced me to re-arrange much of my thought patterns previously held, and to toss aside some of my previous conclusions. This was not too difficult for me. Despite my firm convictions, I have always been a man who tries to face facts, and to accept the reality of life as new experiences and new knowledge unfolds it. I have always kept an open mind, which is necessary to the flexibility that must go hand in hand with every form of intelligent search for truth. During the past eleven days here in the Muslim world, I have eaten from the same plate, drunk from the same glass, and slept in the same bed, (or on the same rug), while praying to the same God, with fellow Muslims, whose eyes were the bluest of blue, whose hair was the blondest of blond, and whose skin was the whitest of white. And in the same words and in the actions and in the deeds of the ‘white’ Muslims, I felt the same sincerity that I felt among the black African Muslims of Nigeria, Sudan and Ghana. We were truly all the same (brothers), because their belief in one God had removed the ‘white’ from their minds, the ‘white’ from their behavior, and the ‘white’ from their attitude. I could see from this, that perhaps if white Americans could accept the Oneness of God, then perhaps, too, they could accept in reality the Oneness of Man, and cease to measure, and hinder, and harm others in terms of their differences in color. With racism plaguing America like an incurable cancer, the so-called ‘Christian’ white American heart should be more receptive to a proven solution to such a destructive problem. Perhaps it could be in time to save America from imminent disaster, the same destruction brought upon Germany by racism that eventually destroyed the Germans themselves. 1/2

Nicholas Brothers in the 1940 film “Down Argentine Way”. Director Irving Cummings at the time had considered their dancing scene too long. However, it was thanks to dance director Nick Castle - imploring Cummings to the contrary insisting the piece remain uncut with no slice on the cutting room floor. I, for one, imagine unnecessary horror of butchering fine work as theirs. It was tested at the initial screening and rapturously met with thunderous - and incessant applause that they were surprisingly forced to rewind the film for replay. The film was the first in an ongoing series of Latin American themed movies becoming popular in the ‘40s. One of the many things which distinguished this particular performance from their others was the duo were to dance to Latin inspired music fused with American tap dancing. Giving subtle cultural interlay between cultures. The two produce percussive taps to the Latin rhythms with rhythmic - and music note values considerably faster than the very music itself. The precision and clarity of the taps are astounding. Previously the duo danced to developing jazz idioms of the time - but this performance showcasing their ability to dance to any kind of music while making it uniquely their own. From a technical perspective there are several kinds of new inventive steps - and of a novel kind as both display techniques and also variations of these steps from shuffles, to slides, repeated taps with the same foot - which is incredibly difficult to perform. This is why in technical piano playing repeated notes can be a nightmare to execute - but both perform repeated taps with accurate musicality and control making the tap composition flawless. We see side foot taps too where the outer parts of the foot’s edge are used to create taps. This is simply virtuosity. With additional forward flips into splits, and mesmerising floor work, and incredible base strength, and muscular power in leg muscle support. The leaps over the handkerchief directly into the splits are a wonder. This duo could match anything Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire ever did.

Incoming Apple CEO John Ternus gave commencement speech at Penn Engineering School in 2024. He does version of Steve Jobs “paint both sides of the fence even if other people don’t know” attention-to-detail story…about screws for the Cinema Dislay monitor: “Here’s my first [advice]: the care that you put into your work really matters. My first project at Apple was the Cinema Display. It was a large desktop monitor. It had a beautiful clear plastic enclosure that was held together with some screws coming in from the back. These screws were made of stainless steel, and the head of every screw was machined to have a pattern of concentric grooves that shimmered like a CD when light moved across it. I should probably say, if some of you have never seen a CD before, you can ask your parents afterward. At some point in my first year, I found myself at a supplier facility. I was far away from home, it was well past midnight. I was using a magnifying glass to count the number of grooves on the head of this screw, which, remember, lives on the back of the display. And I was arguing with the supplier because these parts had 35 grooves, they were supposed to have 25. I distinctly remember stepping back for a minute and thinking to myself, “What the hell am I doing? Is this normal?” And I thought about it, and I realized it might not be normal, but it’s right. It’s right because I’d already spent months working on that product, and if you’re going to spend that much time on something, you should put in your very best effort. Maybe a customer notices, maybe they don’t, but either way, whenever I saw one of those displays on someone’s desk, it mattered to me to know that my teammates and I had considered everything about it and done the very best job we could.” *** H/T to Kevin Gee for flagging this:
