We represented nine students and three parents who were unlawfully targeted for their pro-life views by Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum staff on the day of the March for Life. We took the Smithsonian to court, and we won. The museum agreed to a settlement that included personal apologies, a private tour from the director, and a court order barring this kind of discrimination against pro-life speech from happening again. We set out to hold them accountable, and we did.

Great question from Daily Caller’s Reagan Reese asking President Trump about why the administration said in May they would scrutinize and remove visas from Chinese students, but have now said yesterday 600,000 should be allowed to study in the United States. Trump says “we’re getting along very well with China” and “it’s very insulting to say students can’t come here because they’ll go out and start building schools and they’ll be able to survive it.” “I like that their students come here and I like that other countries students come here and you know what would happen if they didn’t? Our college system would go to hell very quickly. You’d have — and it wouldn’t be the top colleges. It would be colleges that struggle on the bottom and you take 300,000 or 600,000 students out of the system...we’re honored to have their students here...We have a tremendous college system, the best in the world, not even close.”

It’s good news that Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has today announced she will finally implement the complaints scheme promised under the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023 (HEFSA). This has been a long time coming and is the result of a sustained campaign to protect free speech on campus. Upon taking office, Bridget Phillipson paused HEFSA’s implementation, including the complaints scheme. After we brought legal proceedings, she U-turned and committed to delivering it. She has kept her word on that, and we thank her. At the Free Speech Union, around 8% of the 5,700+ cases we’ve handled over the past six years have involved universities failing to protect free speech and academic freedom. From April next year, the new scheme will allow academics, university staff and visiting speakers to take complaints directly to the Office for Students (OfS), free of charge, rather than pursuing costly legal action. Universities that fail to uphold free speech could face fines of over £500,000 or 2% of their income. But while this is good news, it’s not great news. Under the new scheme, students will not be able to bring complaints. Instead, they must go to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator or pursue expensive legal action themselves. Students should have access to this scheme, and we will continue to campaign for that right. There is also a wider issue: because HEFSA applies only in England, the scheme will not be available to those at universities across the rest of the UK. Regarding these anti-Trump protests at public schools: The kids can't read, they can't make change at the grocery store and they don't know their pronouns. And now we know why - their schools are Antifa training camps. "This is why school choice matters and this is why giving parents the ability to send their students to the school that they desire is so important. We have to make sure that students aren't forced to be in these indoctrination centers but that parents have a choice when it comes to their education. States like Kansas are continuing to move to school choice but we have to win governorships and super majorities and legislators to make sure that this happens." 🚨 BREAKING: FSU member and University College London (UCL) academic Michelle Shipworth has been BANNED from teaching her own course, after a Chinese student complained that discussing modern slavery in China was too "provocative". Incredibly, UCL sided with students who said they were "distressed" by her handling of the topic, and imposed a raft of restrictions on Michelle in order to ensure their courses remained "commercially viable" to Chinese students. The The Telegraph has the full story! FSU Director Dr Ben Barry Jones spoke to Michelle about her ordeal, and the shocking extent to which UCL has now curtailed her academic freedom — full video is below. The FSU's case team has been advising Michelle since October on challenging these restrictions internally. FSU Head Toby Young has now written to UCL asking for all restrictions to be overturned immediately. There can be no basis for them, no defence of them. Michelle has the right to academic freedom, to freedom of speech, and we will defend that right.

🚨 BREAKING: FSU member and University College London (UCL) academic Michelle Shipworth has been BANNED from teaching her own course, after a Chinese student complained that discussing modern slavery in China was too "provocative". Incredibly, UCL sided with students who said they were "distressed" by her handling of the topic, and imposed a raft of restrictions on Michelle in order to ensure their courses remained "commercially viable" to Chinese students. FSU Director Dr Ben Barry Jones spoke to Michelle about her ordeal, and the shocking extent to which UCL has now curtailed her academic freedom — full video is below. The FSU's case team has been advising Michelle since October on challenging these restrictions internally. FSU Head Toby Young has now written to UCL asking for all restrictions to be overturned immediately. There can be no basis for them, no defence of them. Michelle has the right to academic freedom, to freedom of speech, and we will defend that right.
