The decision came after over a million people signed a petition calling for his freedom and as thousands marched at the New York federal building. Khalil, a permanent resident, was detained by DHS agents who stated they were revoking his green card status. An attorney for Khalil reported “his spirits are undaunted” and that his arrest is a transparently unconstitutional targeting based on political viewpoint. His wife, who is eight months pregnant, said, “Mahmoud is my rock, … He constantly puts his needs last when it comes to helping others. … I need your help to bring Mahmoud home, so he is here beside me, holding my hand in the delivery room as we welcome our first child into this world.“
