Shrimp: "One minute I was sitting on the toilet and the next – VOOOOP! I was half way to a Pad Thai."

Does it make the shrimp look…bigger?

Sand shrimp are small crustaceans that live in sandy or muddy bottoms of oceans and estuaries. They look like tiny prawns and are often used as bait for fishing. Some species are also called "ghost shrimp" due to their transparent bodies.

In Australia we have a similar species we called yabbies or nippers. Ours have one larger claw than the other. They are a bit smaller and that’s why our yabbie pumps have a 2 inch diameter. We often find them on a sandbanks and their is given away by a small hole in the sand. They are a favourite food for species such as whitings, bream and flathead. The routine is to pump them up at low tide and cast them onto the same spot at high tide when the fish are actively hunting for them. Never try eating one but ours have very little flesh, but they are gun bait. Guaranteed a bite if there are fish around.
