This video was sent to me from the Beaver River below the Cottonwood Fire burn scar. While the flooding itself isn’t too severe here, notice how black the water is. That’s ash, soot, sediment, and debris being washed off the burned landscape and into the river. It’s a good reminder that the impacts of a major wildfire don’t end when the flames are extinguished. Burn scars dramatically increase runoff because the scorched ground can’t absorb water as efficiently. Even a relatively brief thunderstorm can send muddy water, rocks, and debris racing downstream. With an active monsoon pattern expected over the next several days, the flood threat could increase not only around the Cottonwood Fire burn scar but across other recent wildfire burn scars in Utah as well. It doesn’t take a widespread rain event—just one slow-moving thunderstorm over the right location can trigger dangerous flash flooding. Thursday, March 26, 2026 6:41 PM: The latest water vapor satellite shows a rapidly intensifying low pressure axis of a 552 DM low approximately 345 miles northwest of the Hawaiian islands. At the same time, we have another storm axis that’s emerging just to the east of Hawaii, which was part of the storm that brought a lot of rain to the region. Now this storm has really tapped into an intensification process in the last 24 to 36 hours that honestly, the models are not picking up on for California. Kind of an interesting situation here to see how this is going to unfold. Now we are expecting some rain next week into central and southern California, and especially northern California, but the question is how much rainfall will we be getting because of this latest atmospheric view showing this rapidly developing storm situation. This animation encapsulates why slow moving storms like #Melissa are so dangerous for mountainous islands like #Hispaniola (#Haiti & #DR) If NHC is correct this will move ~3 mph or slower. But even if the storm moves a little faster, especially if this storm ends up being a near/direct hit to Hispaniola, the collision between the tropical moisture and the mountains can be disastrous. This is our Hi-Res GRAF model. It shows a direct hit, but a faster moving storm. In just 72 hours it shows totals over 3 feet. Imagine if it moves even slower! Either way water cascades from the higher terrain downward into the valley villages, causing massive floods and mudslides. Now, we may avoid this outcome with the right track, but we must be prepared for the worst. Folks, if you are in the central Greater Antilles, take this storm seriously! Melissa doesn’t have to become a hurricane to be incredibly destructive. Worth noting, in 2016 Hurricane Matthew killed over 600 people in Haiti. #Caribbean
