Where will soon to be #Melissa go and how strong will it get? Here’s a fairly comprehensive / efficient animation to outline the possibilities. Tough forecast. We have high confidence (but not certainty) it will not hit Florida, but the Bahamas are certainly a concern. The real question is will the storm take the first jet stream dip -or- drift for days until it takes the 2nd jet dip and heads northeast. If it evacuates early and moves over Haiti/DR it may be weaker but it will dump very dangerous amounts of rain. These slow moving systems are notorious for deadly flooding there, especially due to mountain run-off. If instead it waits and moves west, it may become a major hurricane with near record water temps. Then as a possible major hurricane it would move near Jamaica, Caymans, Cuba, Bahamas and/or Turks & Caicos close to Halloween. Jamaica has mountains over 5000 ft high… a peak over 7K. Besides winds forecast to be cat 4/5 intensity (perhaps over 155 mph at the surface) the rain is expected to be prolific, due to slow movement and lift from the mountains (similar to Helene in NC) especially IF #Melissa is a direct hit. When you combine cat 4/5 winds with 3 feet plus of rain, catastrophic is not an overstatement. For all those on #Jamaica who are reading this, please take this as a serious threat to your life. It may be, and this is not meant to sensationalize.

We have been working around the clock to prepare for Hurricane Milton and to ensure that federal, state, and local resources are being coordinated in an efficient and effective way. We urge you to take this storm seriously. Please listen to your local officials, and if you are told to evacuate, please do so immediately. Do not wait until it is too late. Already, we have sent more than 1,000 federal personnel to be on the ground in Florida to assist with preparation for this hurricane, and we will continue to scale up those efforts. We will continue to do everything we can to protect the people who are in the path of this storm. Once the storm has passed, we will be there to help folks recover and rebuild as we are continuing to do for the communities in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and across the southeast who have been devastated by Hurricane Helene.

The new cone from the NHC paints a terribly grim picture. It calls for Melissa to make landfall in Jamaica with winds of 155 MPH and potential gusts up to 190 MPH. And that’s if she only peaks as a low-end CAT 5. Right now, the storm has leveled off, but this actually isn’t good news. Jamaica radar indicates that Melissa is possibly about to undergo an eyewall replacement cycle or merger, which explains why the Hurricane’s pressure has risen a bit (953 mbar) despite an absolutely monstrous appearance on satellite. The problem, however, is that Melissa is still only moving at 3 mph and will have plenty of time to complete the cycle/merger; and given the favorability of the environment, it could wrap up smoothly. What’s worse, the core wind field may grow larger in size during the process. At this time, models and the NHC unfortunately remain locked on the worst case scenario prospect of Hurricane Melissa reaching Category 5 intensity.

Thursday, March 26, 2026 6:41 PM: The latest water vapor satellite shows a rapidly intensifying low pressure axis of a 552 DM low approximately 345 miles northwest of the Hawaiian islands. At the same time, we have another storm axis that’s emerging just to the east of Hawaii, which was part of the storm that brought a lot of rain to the region. Now this storm has really tapped into an intensification process in the last 24 to 36 hours that honestly, the models are not picking up on for California. Kind of an interesting situation here to see how this is going to unfold. Now we are expecting some rain next week into central and southern California, and especially northern California, but the question is how much rainfall will we be getting because of this latest atmospheric view showing this rapidly developing storm situation. I think we just got to keep watch on how this will develop in the next several days, but I wanted to be brutally honest with you regarding what is happening with the atmosphere right now especially as it crosses into ongoing warming of the pacific sea surface temperatures. #CAwx
