⚠️ An EPIC 48 hours are ahead for California as a powerful, 3 PRONGED storm delivers Catastrophic Flooding, extreme Mountain Snow, and widespread Damaging Winds. 🎅This event begins Christmas Eve, with the first storm moving onshore, followed by a second major system on Christmas Day. 🌧️ The biggest threat is flooding. Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at 6:52 AM: What you have witnessed yesterday and this past weekend across California and parts of Southern California is the birth pains of an El Niño development and the ongoing escalation the warming of the Pacific torrential rains came through the San Fernando Valley with such strong, thunderstorms that it caused significant flooding in the Sherman Oaks, Universal City area around 1:05 PM - 1:35 PM yesterday on April 13, 2026. This powerful storm packed winds gusts of over 50 mph and it’s a true testament that we are no longer in a pattern that brings rain in just winter time but is now extending into April and May and beyond with that said we have another storm on the heels that will be arriving very quickly on April 21 - 27, 2026. The next storm will also bring more heavy rain, thunder, and lightning, and yes, more snowfall to the local mountains. As the Pacific continues to warm, the weather will become more drastic with extreme heat waves and more unusual severe rain events for California. This situation will get quite scary if it continues to verify by the end of October and November with the super El Niño development and the atmosphere connecting something that we’ve not seen since 1982, 1997/ 1998. Elsewhere across the mid-Hudson Valley, any wet snow that falls this afternoon is unlikely to stick to paved surfaces. After 4:00 pm, the main precipitation type will be rain, and it’s expected to become heavy in the evening. The forecast for Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning is a tumultuous one: - Periods of heavy rain and maybe even a thunderstorm between 6:00 pm - 3:00 am, with rainfall amounts ranging from 2-4 inches (a month’s worth or more) - Rapid snow melt, especially when the temperature reaches the low-to-mid 50s after midnight - Strong-to-damaging wind gusts of 40-60 mph between 6:00 pm - 3:00 am Possible impacts include: - Ponding of water and flooding on streets, particularly in urban and low-lying areas - Flooding of rivers, creeks, and streams, some of which may rise out of their banks - Scattered-to-widespread power outages and downed tree branches; the combination of sodden grounds and strong winds may cause some trees to topple If you live in a flood prone location, expect flooding tonight — take extra steps to protect your property. There has been a lot of talk about the NOAA Lockheed WP-3D Orion aircraft in Shannon this week. The aircraft, N42RF aka “Kermit” is in Shannon for the next while as they monitor Storm Éowyn which hits Ireland on Friday morning! Q: What do scientists onboard do?🤔 Scientists aboard the aircraft deploy GPS dropwindsondes as NOAA pilot and navigate the P-3 through the hurricane/storm. These instruments continuously transmit measurements of pressure, humidity, temperature, and wind direction and speed as they fall toward the sea, providing a detailed look at the structure of the storm and its intensity. The P-3s' tail Doppler radar and lower fuselage radar systems, meanwhile, scan the storm vertically and horizontally, giving scientists and forecasters a real-time look at the storm. The new cone from the NHC paints a terribly grim picture. It calls for Melissa to make landfall in Jamaica with winds of 155 MPH and potential gusts up to 190 MPH. And that’s if she only peaks as a low-end CAT 5. Right now, the storm has leveled off, but this actually isn’t good news. Jamaica radar indicates that Melissa is possibly about to undergo an eyewall replacement cycle or merger, which explains why the Hurricane’s pressure has risen a bit (953 mbar) despite an absolutely monstrous appearance on satellite. The problem, however, is that Melissa is still only moving at 3 mph and will have plenty of time to complete the cycle/merger; and given the favorability of the environment, it could wrap up smoothly. What’s worse, the core wind field may grow larger in size during the process. At this time, models and the NHC unfortunately remain locked on the worst case scenario prospect of Hurricane Melissa reaching Category 5 intensity.

This video was sent to me from the Beaver River below the Cottonwood Fire burn scar. While the flooding itself isn’t too severe here, notice how black the water is. That’s ash, soot, sediment, and debris being washed off the burned landscape and into the river. It’s a good reminder that the impacts of a major wildfire don’t end when the flames are extinguished. Burn scars dramatically increase runoff because the scorched ground can’t absorb water as efficiently. Even a relatively brief thunderstorm can send muddy water, rocks, and debris racing downstream. With an active monsoon pattern expected over the next several days, the flood threat could increase not only around the Cottonwood Fire burn scar but across other recent wildfire burn scars in Utah as well. It doesn’t take a widespread rain event—just one slow-moving thunderstorm over the right location can trigger dangerous flash flooding. If you’re camping, hiking, or recreating near burn scars, keep a close eye on the forecast and be prepared to move to higher ground quickly if storms develop.

This is our Hi-Res GRAF model. It shows a direct hit, but a faster moving storm. In just 72 hours it shows totals over 3 feet. Imagine if it moves even slower! Either way water cascades from the higher terrain downward into the valley villages, causing massive floods and mudslides. Now, we may avoid this outcome with the right track, but we must be prepared for the worst. Folks, if you are in the central Greater Antilles, take this storm seriously! Melissa doesn’t have to become a hurricane to be incredibly destructive. Worth noting, in 2016 Hurricane Matthew killed over 600 people in Haiti. #Caribbean

MAJOR HURRICANE ERICK TO HIT MEXICO — Category 4 landfall possible with destructive and locally devastating impacts. Erick became a Category 1 hurricane at 8 AM ET this morning. It’s now likely a major hurricane at Category 3 strength, which will be reflected in the 6 PM CT update. Erick now has a cleared-out eye apparent on both infrared and visible satellite imagery. This storm is, in many ways, reminiscent of Otis — a surprise Category 5 that hit in October of 2023. Residents in coastal Guerrero and Oaxaca need to be prepared for major hurricane impacts. Winds of 110-130 mph are probable where the eyewall moves ashore within 15 miles of the landfall location. A storm surge up to 10-12 feet is possible just east of, or to the right of, the eye. The eye will likely come ashore somewhere between Acapulco y El Azufre. Farther inland, 1-2 feet of flooding rains could bring mudslides to the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains. The system has every reason to continue intensifying up until the point of landfall — warm waters between 82-86°F (28-30°C), weak upper-level winds to prevent disrupting the storm, ample no posture to prevent dry air entrainment, and divergence (spreading) or the winds aloft. The more the air spreads above the storm, the more air the storm can suck in from below — and the more the winds strengthen.

The first wind event will impact not just Northern California but also Central and Southern California in the next 72 hours. Let me explain. The initial wind event will affect Northern California as a surface cold front crashes through, with north winds gusts reaching 45 to 60 mph. This particular wind event will impact the Napa, Santa Rosa, and San Francisco regions from Wednesday noon through about 1 PM Thursday, when the cold front moves down into Bakersfield, kicking up dust and debris and potentially causing issues on the 5 Freeway and 99. This will likely have impacts later tonight through Thursday. Meanwhile, in Southern California, northwest wind gusts are projected to reach 40 to 55 mph, possibly causing trees to fall and powerlines to collapse early Thursday morning and continuing through Thursday night. This will also affect Long Beach, California, which is quite unusual for these events. A secondary low-pressure axis will take shape, arriving on Saturday at 4AM to Sunday at 12PM positioning itself near Yuma, Arizona. This atmospheric setup with allow asurface high over Santa Cruz, California of a 1025 millibar high will create ideal conditions for a strong and potentially strong Santa Ana wind event for Southern California particularly the corridor from Santa Clarita to Camarillo around 55 to 65 mph, creating potential for destructive power lines to come down. Unfortunately, this very strong wind will cause mountain waves in the San Fernando Valley and Malibu region. The good news is that we will not see significant fire activity due to the recent tremendous rainfall we experienced in mid February 2026 and in December 2025. However, Saturday 2AM - 9AM there is concern that we could see even isolated stronger winds in Altadena and Pasadena that could exceed 65 MPH gusts. I am closely monitoring the situation, as this very windy period will also affect Las Vegas and parts of Arizona with gusts of 45MPH - 65 MPH. If you are traveling in those areas, please be aware of blowing dust and debris on highways. #CAwx

I'm already smelling the smoke this morning, a sign that it's reached ground level. That means reduced visibility, smoky conditions, and a noticeable impact on air quality throughout the day. Today will be the worst day. A north wind on Friday will begin pushing the smoke south, and showers and thunderstorms this weekend should help scrub some of the smoke from the atmosphere. If possible, limit prolonged outdoor activity today—especially if you have asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions. See you at 7 am on PIX11 News with the latest updates.
