I will say... while she was certainly struggling with mental health issues, there are quite a few reasons to doubt that Clancy had psychosis. The odds of this happening once and never before and never again since but during a window she told her husband to go pick up medication and dinner seems unlikely. She also killed her children one at a time, isolating them. She also searched up psychosis, which seems odd if she hadn't previously experienced it. All of things in isolation may be explained, but all together are rather suspicious. There was also inconsistency in her recalling of when she heard the voice, and she took a call from Patrick while all of this was happening. The voice disappeared after she had committed these brutal acts, which is highly unusual. She was clearly struggling with her mental health, but there's, of course, a substential difference between deciding to kill yourself and your children so that they wouldn't be left alone with her, vs a delusion commanding her to kill during a break from reality. It's a tough case because we'll probably not know for SURE.

No matter what you think caused this, those three children are the primary victims. But feminists on TikTok don’t seem to think that. It can be true to say Lindsay was failed in a variety of ways, but at the end of the day, she methodically killed her children. We can’t say for certain that psychosis caused this. People who commit horrific crimes probably fall somewhere on a spectrum of psychosis. But if we say that no one could have done something like this without being insane, then no one is going to prison for anything. If we negate justice because of someone’s mental health diagnosis in every case, then we have no justice system.

She was not “hearing voices.” She was not abandoned by her family. She was diagnosed with a mood disorder - never psychosis - and went to a variety of doctors who all prescribed different medications, which she took unreliably and not simultaneously. She only heard a voice one time - and that was right before she killed her kids. Extremely atypical for psychosis. She carefully planned her children’s murders down to the minute. She researched the distance of a restaurant she’d ask Patrick to go to. Added on a last-minute errand before he left. Calmly answered his phone call in the middle of her crime. Brought her children down to the basement one by one, overpowering their resistance and killing them slowly. It does seem like she had support from her family. She may have still been overwhelmed, but it’s not true that all of her cries for help went unanswered. I originally placed too much blame on the many SSRIs she was prescribed. For years on my show, I’ve talked to health professionals who have been warning about the violence-inducing effects of these drugs, and I thought Lindsay’s case may be an example of that reality. Is it still possible these SSRIs had a negative effect? Absolutely. But the case that these drove her into a psychotic episode is weak. This evidence continues to reveal, in my opinion, that Lindsay Clancy methodically murdered her children and she was fully aware of what she was doing.
