For years we've been told AI is taking the jobs. This economist argues the data doesn't support that. If AI was replacing workers at scale, productivity and economic growth should be booming. Instead, hiring has slowed, growth remains weak, and productivity is disappointing. Maybe the bigger story is offshoring, weak investment, labour market competition, and policies that increased the number of workers faster than the number of jobs. Canada may have bigger problems than AI.
