"Hate speech matters too - there's too much incitement to hate going on in our country": The Government recently told the EU that Ireland doesn't need to update its hate speech laws, but around the same time, Micheál Martin told an NGO the opposite:

In Irish law, "hatred" is defined as hostility or hatred toward a person or group based on protected characteristics like race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, gender, disability, or Traveller community membership. It applies to threatening, abusive, or insulting acts likely or intended to stir up hatred under the "Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act 1989" and the "Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences) Bill 2023". Why were they pushing hate speech laws when we already have it? This is the scary part hate is not defined in the current hate law.
