Health is a devolved function, and the Governor is the principal officer responsible for the management and performance of the health sector in Trans Nzoia County. While the county may be facing challenges including delays in SHA disbursements no circumstance justifies the persistent shortage of medicines, inadequate facilities, or...

As the Senator of Trans Nzoia, I am deeply hurt and disappointed by the way Governor George Natembeya is reasoning. Leadership is about service, not personal or political interests. Some of us don’t help our people because we seek popularity—we do it because we know what it feels like to go to bed hungry, to struggle to put food on the table for our families, or to watch a loved one suffer due to lack of medical is disheartening and shameful that, instead of working to improve the lives of the people, the governor is inciting them against the very services that are meant to uplift them—services that, in reality, are not even our direct responsibility but ones we have taken up out of compassion and commitment to our we wish healthcare in Trans Nzoia was working so that no mother had to watch her child suffer due to lack of proper medical attention. How we wish bursaries were distributed fairly so that every bright student, regardless of tribe or political background, could get an equal opportunity to pursue education. How we wish seed maize and other resources were given based on need and not political allegiance. The people of Trans Nzoia deserve better. They deserve leaders who put service above self, unity above division, and action above empty words. Leadership should never be about playing politics with people’s lives—it should be about making a real difference. No matter how many stones you throw at me, I will not be shaken. I will not be silenced. And I will certainly not stop helping our people. George Natembeya

AN ATTACK OF COUNTY OFFICERS! It is the highest level of impunity for anyone to attack officers of the Nairobi City County Government while they are lawfully discharging their duties. Earlier today, our officers who went to remove an illegal structure that was blocking a public road were violently attacked and beaten by mobilized goons behaving like criminals. As a result, four of our officers are currently being treated in hospital after sustaining serious head injuries. This kind of barbaric act is unacceptable and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Let it also go on record that order and dignity cannot be compromised. Whenever we respond to complaints from members of the public, the same public must not turn against the very officers mandated to protect and serve them. We cannot live in a county where everyone believes the law should bend to their will. Let it be clearly understood assaulting county officers on duty is a grave offence, and we shall ensure that those who mobilized, aided, or participated in this attack are held fully accountable before the law. We will not allow a few lawless individuals to intimidate or harm officers who are working tirelessly to restore order and uphold the rule of law in our city. Our officers deserve respect, safety, and protection as they serve the people of Nairobi with dedication. An attack on one officer is an attack on the entire County Government of Nairobi, and we shall revisit this matter firmly to ensure justice is done.

I deplore today’s strikes on the PRCS-run Al-Amal hospital in the southern #Gaza city of Khan Younis, which severely damaged the Palestine Red Crescent Society training centre located within the hospital complex. My World Health Organization (WHO) and UN Humanitarian colleagues today undertook a mission to the facilities, where they witnessed extensive damage and displacement of civilians The attacks, according to the PRCS, killed at least five civilians, including a 5-day old infant. 14,000 people were sheltering at the hospital in the besieged southern #Gaza city of Khan Younis. Many of them have now left, and those remaining are extremely fearful for their safety and planning to leave a place they had turned to for refuge and protection. Hospitals, ambulances, health workers, and people seeking care must be protected, at all times, under international humanitarian law. Today’s bombardments are unconscionable. Gaza’s health system is already on its knees, with health and aid workers continuously stymied in their efforts to save lives due to the hostilities. I join international calls for an immediate ceasefire, including urgent action to ensure the accelerated and unimpeded flow of food, medical supplies, water and other essential items to millions of civilians forced to live in unspeakable conditions of hunger, disease spread, and lack of hygiene and sanitation. Gazans are still receiving only a fraction of the supplies they had access to before the war, just as only a fraction of Gazans in need of medical evacuation are being evacuated. This is unacceptable in light of the dire humanitarian catastrophe which has unfolded over three months. Indeed, WHO’s movements, particularly in northern Gaza and increasingly in the south, have been severely impeded by the ongoing violence inside Gaza. Our operations are further impeded when essential local partners, like the PRCS, are themselves needlessly impacted by the strikes. This on top of widespread deaths, suffering and decimation of homes, roads and other infrastructure across this tiny coastal strip of land. If the conditions for a cease-fire in hostilities have not been met by now, I do not know what it will take. WHO reiterates that health must never be a target during conflicts, and all effort must be taken to protect health facilities, health workers, and patients.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park updated the public on the incident of the NSW Healthcare workers seen on video claiming to have killed Israeli Australian patients that come to their hospital. The minister gave assurances to the community, said the workers will be sacked, and never work within the NSW healthcare system again subject to an investigation confirming the contents of the video. The hospital is also under review, to establish if there is a history of such incidents, as concerns grow in the community for the safety of patients attended to by these two heath-care workers. " Those people subject to that investigation will not ever be working for New South Wales Health again. There is no place, no place in our hospital and health system for this sort of view to ever, ever take place. There is no place for this sort of perspective in our society. But hospitals are different in the fact that every single Australian and every single resident of this state should be able to go to their local hospital when they need care and attention and get high quality care that is safe and effective. To the Jewish community today, I say not only am I sorry, but I can assure you this, the care that you get in our hospitals will continue to be first class. We will investigate this uphill and down dale. We will not just be looking at this incident per se, but we will also be obviously going through previous cases to make sure that that hospital has been working in a way that reflects those values around safety and care."

I have followed with deep concern recent reports of suspected organ trafficking involving Mediheal Hospital and other health facilities in Kenya. It should disturb the nation to watch the testimonials of Amon Kipruto Mely, his mother Leah Metto, Kennedy and other Kenyans who are victims of these heinous acts. If confirmed, these allegations are outrageous violations of Article 28 of the Constitution-the Right to Dignity and a potential threat to the Right to Life (Article 26). It is worth noting that various medical associations have raised alarm over allegations of organ trafficking since May 2023. The government has largely ignored those reports. Kenya Kwanza is only taking action now following international media uproar. This is yet another confirmation that this government only acts when its international reputation is at stake. I take note of the establishment of the Independent Investigative Committee on Tissue and Organ Transplant Services by the Health Cabinet Secretary. This Committee must not become yet again another PR stunt that does not address the broken healthcare system and rampant disregard for human life and dignity. I call on the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDU), as the body mandated to regulate medical practitioners and healthcare facilities, to carry out its duties with utmost professionalism and integrity to protect the lives of Kenyans. The health of our people is the wealth of our country. We must do all we can to protect citizens from exploitation. It is critical that we address the poverty that is driving so many young people to be exploited by criminal groups trafficking organs and kidneys. It is urgent to end the greed and impunity of high-ranking officials involved in this organized crime. It is time to reset this country. We must restore hope and humanity #ThePeopleShall
