Sometimes words alone aren't enough. The calls just keep coming, the suffering continues, and this needs to be made abundantly clear: ANY hedgehog out in the open in the day is seriously ill and needs to be taken *to a rescue*, never a vet, urgently. You CAN NOT just keep them. I take phone calls every single day from people who have seen a hedgehog out in the day (mostly babies this time of year) and have taken them in and 'cared for' them, and are ringing me 2 or 3 days later asking why they aren't moving any more, or are crying. Typically, a lady who called this morning saw a baby hedgehog out in the day yesterday, covered in flies. She said she picked the fly eggs off and kept this baby in a nice warm box but is worried today that he seems sluggish. That's because he was already deathly ill and in terrible pain when she found him. The flies knew he was close to death so they laid their eggs on him, so that when the maggots hatched they'd have a nice fresh meal. And, as I explained to this lady, that's exactly what they would be doing now - the eggs she didn't see, in his ears, eyes, nose, mouth and genitals - would be eating him alive now, from the inside. He would be in agony. Flies are capable of forcing inside the as yet unopened eyelids of babies and laying eggs there. The damage the maggots do when they hatch is catastrophic. It really is critical that there is no ambiguity about this: If you see a hedgehog out in the open in the day, grab her, then ring a good rescue who will ask all the right questions and triage the situation, and give you advice. Below are two images of the same baby hedgehog, ten minutes apart. The photo is as she was admitted, looking cute and fine, with all the visible fly eggs picked off. The video is the same baby after I'd applied a substance that irritates maggots and makes them come out from inside their victim's bodily orifices. The substance is very toxic and must be very carefully and sparingly applied by a knowledgeable and experienced rescue. This little girl was treated successfully and is now thriving; growing so well she may even be able to be released back to the wild to hibernate this year. She's a lucky one, as she was brought to the right place. Many aren't this lucky and die horribly. I beg you, please be their ambulance, not their jailor.

A hedgehog scratching is a common sight, but not for the reason most think. Despite the myth, hedgehogs do not have fleas. Well, no more than any other animal. In fact, it's quite rare for a hedgehog to have fleas, and when they do, the fleas are species-specific, so they can't infect any other animal. A quick update on poor baby Asa, the dog-attacked hoglet poisoned with an overdose of painkillers by the vet: Her internal bleeding has stopped. Her eye is healing but still closed, so I won't know if it is viable or not for another week or so. She's learned to eat by herself now, and is enjoying RC puppy mouse.🥰 She had begun pacing again, so to calm her and give her confidence and comfort she's been moved into a pen with Bella, a little hoglet around the same age but better nourished. Both are being cared for and nursed by the wonderful Prickle Lodge - Hedgehog Rescue rescue.

Military and mail-in ballots were found to be on different paper, had no folds, the watermarks were dark grey, with statistically impossible stacks of military ballots being 100% for Joe Biden. This is the pen of Leah, the morning after her first night's sleep here. Every black dot you see is a tick. They are black because they're full of her blood, and growing. (This is one of the reasons why I have only white bedding and floor coverings. If she was in newspaper you'd never see this). Poor little Leah is absolutely smothered in hundreds of ticks, and has fleas, too. Despite the old wives' tale, it's very rare for a hedgehog to have fleas. So rare in fact, that a professor of entomology who studies these sorts of things pays me £20 a go when I send him fleas. Additionally, hedgehog fleas are species-specific, so they can't infest or live on any other animal. A hedgehog has to be seriously ill or incredibly weak to attract ectoparasites such as ticks and fleas. And poor Leah is that weak - she is suffering from starvation, AND she has just given birth. A couple clearing out their shed found poor little Leah huddled with her babies in a pile of blankets, where she'd given birth. They live in army barracks, and their garden is tiny, with no suitable hedgehog habitat. Everywhere is kept 'neat'. Despite this, somehow Leah survived. With a shed substituting for a hedgerow and army blankets instead of leaves and moss, Leah managed to make a maternity nest and have her precious babies. But with no food, she was unable to produce enough milk to feed them, and one by one, the babies died. By the time she was found, out of the 7 babies she had given birth to, only 3 were still alive. I saw the bodies so could tell how many days they had survived. The lovely finders had no idea that things were so desperate for our hedgehogs, and that the dramatic decline in insects, due to the way we are 'tidying' our gardens, meant that they are now suffering starvation. Hedgehogs don't eat slugs and snails, they eat beetles and catapillars. Caterpillars make up almost half a hedgehog's diet, and their emergence is perfectly timed with peak baby season, the time of most need. We're in June, peak butterfly time, but how many have you seen lately? Like most people, the finders were completely unaware of how our bad destructive habits are impacting our precious wildlife, until seeing it with their own eyes. They are now committed to improving not just their garden, but the whole Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, and went home armed with leaflets and kitten biscuits and determination. Meanwhile poor tick infested Leah and her 3 surviving babies are safe and warm here, and she's getting good nourishment and care. It's so important these tiny 5 day old babies don't fall victim to the ticks, as they would not survive. I can't use drugs or chemicals as Leah is far too weak and her babies far too vulnerable. So it's just a matter of cleaning her out every day - the very last thing to be subjecting a new mum to. Despite all her hardship, and me meddling, she's a wonderful mum and doing her best to nurture her sweet babies. Last night, her first night here, she ate an entire dish of special Mother and Baby food - enough normally for 2 or 3 hedgehogs. The sight of that empty dish absolutely broke me. It's too early for a prognosis on Leah and the babies, but already, because of them, her little part of the world is going to become more hedgehog-friendly.

His finder was able to bring him to the Orange County Shelter, Tustin CA without trouble, but upon arrival, he was visibly shaken—tense, tail tucked, and unsure of his surroundings. He eventually climbed out of his kennel multiple times and was found curling up to sleep with another husky for comfort. Griffin is now Rescue Only and is listed TBK on Wed Feb 26. Someone knows who did this.💔 On May 17, 2026, a group of 4 to 5 children were reportedly seen at the Main Street Boat Ramp in Middleburg, Florida with a young chihuahua-mix dog. The children were throwing the dog around in the water, holding it underwater, and physically abusing it. A family was able to rescue the dog at the time, but sadly, the dog died a few days later from injuries related to the incident. The children ran off, and the only description available is that they appeared to be between 9 and 13 years old. Parents, if your children were in the area that day or may know someone who was there, please speak with them. Any information could help identify those responsible. The case number is 2026-011933. Despite claims to the contrary, snap rat traps don't conveniently land on the neck, killing quickly. More often than not they land on the legs, or one paw, or in baby hedgehog Odette's case, across the pelvis. It takes days for the trapped animal to die, in agony, starving, dehydrating. The will to live is strong in all animals and the trapped struggle for their lives, sometimes degloving entire paws or feet. It's a barbaric, utterly inhumane device. Little Odette (named after the crippled swan in Swan Lake), only 320g, was spotted by a lovely lady on her way to work, who called for advice. If not for this compassionate woman's swift actions this poor animal would have suffered a slow, torturous, agonising death. Once here, I saw the rat trap was not legal, the apertures were too big (the maximum for a tunnel type trap is 51cm, and this was 65cm), and my keys didn't fit so I called the company and they kindly sent someone over from Surrey. There's no sound on this camera, and my gesticulating is me telling the man to be gentle (he'd assumed the hedgehog was dead, and was shocked she had survived and was still alive), and that the size of the entry hole is a legislative violation - making the harm done to Odette a wildlife crime. Miraculously I couldn't feel any breaks, and her circulation is intact. There's a lot of bruising, swelling and tenderness, but although it's only been one full day, I'm cautiously optimistic for dear baby Odette's recovery.

Miraculously I couldn't feel any breaks, and her circulation is intact. There's a lot of bruising, swelling and tenderness, but although it's only been one full day, I'm cautiously optimistic for dear baby Odette's recovery.

Sad this. The Street Guardians found a vulnerable family on the streets in town on the weekend. They have put them in the Adelphi Hotel for now and given them money for food. But this is only short term. We need to find them somewhere to live and get them on their feet. Any help would be appreciated. If anyone wants to bring food down to them message me and I’ll connect you with them. If anyone wants to send them a few quid for food message me and I’ll send you his bank details. They are in safe hands being looked after by The Street Guardians but if any of you can help take the pressure off them it would be a big help. As they are paying everything out of their own pocket. We’ve just met them in the hotel and done an interview to explain their situation. I’ll post this later. Centennial Nursing Home Employee Arrested for Elder Abuse The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office has arrested an employee of the Orchard Park Health Care Center at 6005 S. Holly St. in Centennial for the alleged abuse of an at-risk adult. Patience Jackson, 33, was arrested at her home on June 11. She is facing charges of: Criminal Negligence – Felony Class 5 Crimes Against an At-Risk Person – Felony Class 5 Complicity – Felony Class 5 On May 9, 2025, Investigator VanCleave was called to Sky Ridge Medical Center on an elder abuse allegation against a 92-year-old female victim who suffers from severe dementia. Hospital employees had noticed the victim had two separate broken bones in her lower leg (a tibia-fibula fracture) after being transported to the hospital via ambulance from Orchard Park Health Care Center. Hospital employees told Investigator VanCleave that the victim’s injuries were not consistent with the injuries stated in the report by Orchard Park Health Care Center. That report noted that the victim was found sitting in her wheelchair, screaming for help in terrible pain, that no one had seen her fall, and they did not know what happened. After almost four weeks of a detailed investigation, Investigator VanCleave gathered enough additional evidence to indicate that two female employees at Orchard Park Health Care Center -- Patience Jackson, a Certified Nursing Assistant, and Zainab Namale, a Licensed Practical Nurse, were likely untruthful about how the victim obtained her injuries. The investigator also believes both suspects were complicit in their actions to hide the truth of what happened to the victim. Investigator VanCleave believes the victim’s injuries occurred on May 8 and were caused by criminal negligence, which is a crime against an at-risk person. An arrest warrant was obtained for both employees. Jackson was booked into the Arapahoe County Detention Facility and is being held on a $2,500 bond. There is currently an active arrest warrant for Namale. This case remains an active, ongoing investigation. The filing of a criminal charge is merely a formal accusation that an individual committed a crime under Colorado law. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
