THE CONDUCT OF PROCEEDINGS IN THE CASE AGAINST HONOURABLE TUNDU A. LISSU IS THE LAW BEING DISREGARDED? The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) raises its voice regarding the troubling conduct in the criminal case against Honourable Tundu Antipas Lissu — a lawyer, former Member of Parliament, and one of the nation’s prominent advocates for human rights, good governance, and constitutionalism. Since his arrest, there has been a disturbing pattern undermining the principles of justice, violating legal procedures, and casting a heavy shadow over our criminal justice system. This is evident in the following: His arrest was conducted without adherence to lawful procedures, signaling an abuse of power; The charges appear to be politically motivated, raising serious concerns about the use of judicial processes as tools for political ends; Denial of even the basic right to greet and meet with fellow citizens before the official hearing of the case; Repeated adjournments of the case on legally unsubstantial grounds, indicating a deviation from legal focus; Interference with or denial of the accused’s right to private consultations with his lawyers, which violates the right to equal legal representation; Indications of breaches of the attorney-client privilege, which is protected under the Constitution and legal framework, and is a cornerstone of the right to an effective legal defense. The right of a client to consult privately with their lawyer is a fundamental right protected by the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Evidence Act, and the Code of Ethics for Advocates. To restrict or interfere with this right is to undermine the foundation of the justice process and impair the accused’s ability to defend themselves adequately before the court. TLS emphasizes the following: The law must not be used as a weapon against justice; State authorities must not place themselves above the Constitution or the laws enacted by Parliament; The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) must reflect deeply on the significant constitutional powers he holds in criminal justice and whether there is sufficient accountability to protect citizens' rights and ensure adherence to the law at all times; The right to legal assistance is not a privilege — it is a right of every citizen. Any criminal case, especially those involving individuals with political or social stature, must be conducted with transparency, fairness, and with respect for human dignity. The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) continues to closely monitor the progress of this case. We reiterate that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done. We call upon the Judiciary and all state organs to uphold and protect the rights of the accused in accordance with the law and the Constitution. Furthermore, we urge all lawyers in the country, the media, and human rights stakeholders to continue championing the protection of justice, freedom of expression, and the rule of law — without fear or favour. BAK MWABUKUSI President, Tanganyika Law Society (TLS)

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧 Chapter Three. So Odious. In 1772, a man named James Somerset escaped his owner in London. He was recaptured. Chained on a ship bound for Jamaica. Three ordinary people decided to do something about it. Not politicians. Not lawyers. Not people of wealth or influence. Thomas Walkin. Elizabeth Cade. John Marlow. Somerset's godparents. They applied for habeas corpus. A law the English had written nearly a century earlier to stop anyone being imprisoned without reason. The case landed on the desk of Lord Mansfield. The most senior judge in England. He did not want it. He tried to settle it privately. He delayed. He adjourned. He knew what was at stake. Fourteen thousand enslaved people lived in England. The merchant class had fortunes riding on the answer. But three ordinary people with a 93 year old law would not go away. On the 22nd of June 1772, Mansfield delivered his ruling. "The state of slavery is so odious that nothing can be suffered to support it but positive law." England had no law allowing slavery. So slavery had no legal basis on English soil. James Somerset walked free. The principle the English had been building toward for five hundred years was locked into law. Not through an army. Not through a revolution. Through three ordinary people who knew the law and used it. 🇬🇧 Their individual stories are on our page. Our book is coming soon. Help us make this possible. Be Part Of Us. Be Proud Of Us. 🇬🇧

“Ayaan Hirsi Ali was challenged over her views on Islam and Sharia law… but the debate quickly turned explosive.” Speaker: Ayaan, you've been quoted as saying that if refugees are coming to this part of the world and bringing their misogynistic views on Sharia law, then they'd better just take a legal U-turn. People have said Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Donald Trump are speaking the same language. So how do you feel about being on the same side as Trump? Ayaan Hirsi Ali: I've been doing this for about the last 14 or 15 years, and maybe I'm allowed a sigh. Because number one, I'm amazed at the betrayal of Muslim women who, for whatever reason, have had an education and are able to emancipate themselves from Islamic law, insisting that Islamic law is not what it is and that we don't understand it. We live in the Information Age. We are literate. Any of us here can pick up the Holy Quran and read the Hadith. And beyond that, because we live in this age of interconnectedness, we can take a look at the facts of where Islamic law is implemented, what it looks like for everyone, and typically what it looks like for women. Saudi Arabia is a country that implements Sharia law. Women are not allowed to drive. They have male guardians. Their testimony is worth half of that of men. They are subjected to every possible humiliation that you can think of. Ayatollah Khomeini, in 1979, with a great deal of public approval, became the Supreme Leader. He implemented Sharia law, Islamic law. One of the first things that he did, he reduced the age of marriage to nine. Everywhere where Islamic law is implemented, you have exactly that. Speaker: Who's the "they"? Ayaan Hirsi Ali: Those who are pushing for Sharia law and those who want to implement Sharia law. Speaker: But none of us are, so that's not a matter of debate. Ayaan Hirsi Ali: The Prophet Muhammad took Aisha, one of his wives after Khadijah died, when she was six, and had sex with her when she was nine. That is Sharia law. I do not understand how someone Speaker: But this is not a debate about Sharia law. Ayaan Hirsi Ali: But this is for Sharia law! You want to get rid of child marriage? Get rid of Sharia law. Speaker: Although it embarrasses me on a global stage to say this, child marriage is common in many cultures, including in Hindu societies. Ayaan Hirsi Ali: That's why Can I just get in? Speaker: All right, I just want to bring in Farah and Hibaaq. What you are saying, Ayaan, doesn't really make sense. I'm glad that you have moved from calling for a war on Islam to saying maybe there is a possibility. In 2007, when you had that interview with Reason magazine, you said we have to go to war with Islam. That was shocking for a woman to be advocating for that. Ayaan Hirsi Ali: Can I answer that? Speaker: Let her have a sentence. Hibaaq Osman: For someone who has actually asked for Islam to be defeated militarily, I am really surprised that you are still saying the same things. And now you are backpedaling Ayaan Hirsi Ali: Islamic law. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Islamic law Hibaaq Osman: You cannot come here to talk about reform that does not exist. Speaker: Okay, I'll tell you one thing: none of these women are constrained by their religion. Hibaaq Osman: No, my point is you cannot reform anything if you don't have the credibility. The fact that you said we have to defeat Islam, you surrendered your credibility. Speaker: Okay, let me get my point in. Hibaaq Osman: There's no time. But the point is, those who claim to be able to reform their society have to be in their society.

Enough is enough. We are done with the gaslighting, and we are demanding action. Donald J. Trump , we need your help. This month alone in Chicago, a father and son were robbed and murdered. A woman with sickle ell A woman was set on fire by a man with multiple arrests who was released right back onto the streets. And at a downtown tree-lighting ceremony, there was a mass shooting where eight or nine people were shot, depending on the network, and one innocent person lost their life. A woman with sickle cell , and her children ,were jumped by a group of elementary school kids. This is how bad things have gotten. When even little kids are acting out violent mob behavior, you know the community is losing control. Families deserve safety, not chaos. We are living in a crisis, and the people in power continue to ignore it. President Donald J. Trump, we are calling on you to intervene. We need the Department of Justice to investigate these criminals in office, Mayor Brandon Johnson , Governor JB Pritzker , Toni Preckwinkle , Chicago Teachers Union leadership, everyone who has failed their duty to protect the citizens of Chicago and Illinois. Their policies have put us in danger. Their negligence has cost lives. Their lawlessness has enabled chaos. And we also need urgent help with the illegal alien criminal invasion overwhelming our city, and state. Our communities are under attack. We cannot wait any longer. President Trump, we need help right now. Chicago and Illinois are in crisis, and we are demanding federal intervention before more innocent people die.
