HELP WANTED: They use a red-ish filter for this segment instead of the blue gray one from earlier, which does look a little better

Comparing the recently released "Timeline Twist-Up" to the original season 1 episodes...🧵 In order: "Rock Bottom," "Ripped Pants," "Neptune's Spatula," and "Help Wanted."

ROCK BOTTOM: The Rock Bottom is probably the most cut and dry reiteration, the only thing really notable being that they re-used Patrick's animation/drawings for a different piece of dialogue than the original.

I think the really garish filter they put over this episode really hurts the visuals here especially, there's not a lot of pure black in the backgrounds and the characters are much brighter than they were originally (cel animation aside)

The decision to gray up the colors to show that it's the past is kind of a strange one to me, because season 1 is very fun and colorful! (An original cel compared to the new special).

RIPPED PANTS: The direct homages are lot quicker in this segment, I think the biggest difference is in the audio department. The difference between s1's sfx and post sequel's is very obvious when side to side like this. The voice acting is pretty different too!

NEPTUNE'S SPATULA: This is a pretty direct homage like the Rock Bottom segment, the abridged dialogue makes this sequence more different from the original than it probably would be otherwise.

Some fun angles are changed I guess to make the inclusion of the Star family work.

I feel like seeing different takes on the same meat and potatoes makes post sequel's approach even more distinct. For example, the more natural voice direction of early SpongeBob versus the more exaggerated, cartoonish direction of post sequel (a lot to read into just one little sound but I promise this is an overarching thing lol).

Perhaps that point is better illustrated with Patrick! (and wow, besides the different delivery, Bill sounds almost exactly the same as Patrick 25 years later!)

The thing that sticks out to me the most in this segment is that it's much slower than the original. The animation timing, the line deliveries, everything! It's been 25 years, I understand the energy might not be the same in the vocal performance, but the animation generally being so much slower only compounds this issue for me

When comparing this sequence of SpongeBob making patties, the animation timing has been reduced to a snail's crawl! And this is only for the "reused" animation, the actual original animation throughout the episode is similarly slow. All these great drawings would be heightened so much by great animation (or even just slightly better timing!)

patrick really sounds EXACTLY the same 26 years later apart from fagerbakke’s more enthusiastic delivery in the remake. the voice still sounds the exact same, just a touch more cheerful
