Here are my thoughts on Elon's post about texting and using FSD. Let me just get ahead of some of the inevitable comments. 1) I 100% agree that it's safer to text and use FSD than it would be to disable FSD and text 2) I realize FSD is...

100% agree with your take. FSD needs to get a bit better first of all. But more importantly, we need a change in Tesla's willingness to accept liability for an at-fault accident & a change in the law before someone should be texting / not paying attention w/ FSD engaged.

@Giga292 Agreed - in my opinion it’s either fully supervised or unsupervised. Whoever is liable needs to be paying full attention. So if I am liable i should not be on my phone.

I think I also agree doing things in the wrong order does a disservice to the long-term cause here. Tesla should be heads-down "perfecting" (obviously it will never be perfect) the software right now, and when it's ready, then collect data and take to regulators / insurance.

Coming out and saying you can text & drive makes Elon/Tesla look like they lack credibility and don't care about safety, perhaps hurting the odds of getting unsupervised FSD approved in the near future even if the data is supportive.

After using FSD 14.2 extensively, I’m all for using your phone and being on FSD. The future is here. It’s actually here. Insane. Thanks @Tesla @elonmusk

@Tesla @elonmusk So are you saying v14.2 cannot make mistakes?

2 people (person A and person B), both with a Blood Alcohol Level of 1.2. Person A or B has to drive towards your vehicle. A is driving manually. B has FSD turned on. Which person would you rather be driving towards you at 50mph? No different with texting....

I want option C) don't drink and drive. I addressed exactly what you're saying in my post AND in my video. is it safer to text and use FSD than text and not use FSD? yes of course. My issue is Elon's post has empowered people to glorify distracted driving more than ever - THAT is a problem. I obviously wish people would just not ever use their phones while driving - but it turns out humans are selfish and dumb and we cannot fix that.

You're not going to change that.. people are going to do it.. you're not going to change people's speeding, you're not going to change people texting you're not going to change people drinking and driving you're not going to change people being tired when they drive.

I think the messaging on this issue could be improved. We shouldn’t text and drive, period. However, having FSD enabled while texting is safer than without it, so Tesla’s decision to relax driver monitoring in certain contexts seems like the right call.

Devin Olsen's profile picture

I don't disagree with it being safer than texting and not using FSD. I just don't love that people now are sharing themselves distracted driving and touting it as a great feature. It's still very illegal and still unsafe - despite how good fsd is.

Should attention monitoring become less and less stringent the better FSD becomes? Remember when we had to keep our hands on the steering wheel This is just a progression of the same principle.

Devin Olsen's profile picture
Devin Olsen9 months ago

I personally don’t think so… it’s either unsupervised or not.

Eric Sirois's profile picture

Would you think differently if FSD supervised was “perfect”?

Devin Olsen's profile picture
Devin Olsen9 months ago

I think as long as it’s supervised you shouldn’t use your phone. Once it’s unsupervised and Tesla is liable you can do whatever you want.

I think if it safe to use your phone then you should be able to use your phone.

My phone will be used with the same caution as before any tweet. As for liability, I don't believe Tesla will ever take the liability of Unsupervised. It will be the insurance companies that will have to decide how to handle it and perhaps they'll give you a discount for it.

The elephant in the room is: Under what circumstances does FSD permit texting while driving? It’s rare! But what, precisely, are the criteria that allow you to text without nag?

vgritsev's profile picture

Yes, FSD is very good. However, 14.2.1 has two issues: it starts to hesitate when changing lanes on highways, and when it misreads the speed limit (or a correct sign is missing), driving becomes difficult. Like driving 55 in a 65 mph zone with options 65 (hurry) or 80 (mad max)

FSD is not safe enough to be unsupervised and handle 100% of the drive (park to park) every time you get into the car. If this is happening for someone, they are the lonely exception. Why aren't everyone's FSD stats 100%?🤔 (but I dont understand. the kiss ass fanboys told me FSD was solved😭) lol Also, why doesn't tesla provide disengagement data such as disengagements per drive, per x miles, per x trips, city vs highway vs suburb vs rural roads? The answer to these questions are easy. The disengagement rates (and the reasons for the disengagements) are too bad and vast to make public and there is practically no one with 100% FSD miles that Tesla or kiss ass fanboys can lean on🤣 Where's the data that shows number of times FSD completed 100% of a drive (park to park) compared to total drives that include manual driving and disengagements? It doesnt exist my friend🤣 I will not be texting and FSD'ing If people want to. I say let'm. But the liability and being a responsible driver still falls on the driver.

Nothing is safe if you’re breaking safety protocols and breaking the law at the same time Even FSD, without texting is still not safe and requires supervision: both eyes on the road! Here is the bonus for the DMV DOJ and SEC records: listening to a con artist isn’t safe either!

It doesn't matter what your thoughts are. The gov't want's to fine people for using mobiles in cars so they won't make an exemption. They made it illegal to eat while driving because there phone cameras were picking up people eating so expect the same treatment.

#1 is the key point. People were pissed at Elon for enabling this, but if it prevents people from simply disabling FSD so they can send that text, then it actually improves safety.

Good point, the real game changer isn’t whether or not Elon says you can do it. It’s whether or not Tesla is willing to take liability.

AvRaam's profile picture

You are not wrong as far as liability goes. But I think Elon meant that the system will bug you much less often depending on traffic. This is not greenlight to use the phone while driving.

There should be a definite navigational leap in FSD before they allow phone use, at least. Unfortuantely another premature announcement from Elon that should've really been avoided.

I text over the steering wheel in FSD all day long. I’ve got 50k miles of FSD and while I don’t love the latest version I do trust it implicitly. That said I’m careful not to text in certain situations like mergers

Texting while using FSD makes you even more unprepared for the edge and corner case disengagement.

Why don’t you show and prove what mistakes. To me, I drove 1100 miles without a single intervention. It changed lane very safely. It made the driving super easy. I am just surprised with what you are saying. Do you really own a Tesla?

To me it's simple. I'm liable for any accidents and will take full responsibility while in FSD. I'd rather Tesla give people more freedom than add more guardrails. There's an argument to be made that reducing the nag when on the phone is safer than forcing people off it.

TheNextAlan's profile picture

I don't think this is a good look for FSD. People getting their first introduction to Tesla FSD won't trust the opinions of drivers who text while driving. It's just too crazy for normal people.

Strange_Universe's profile picture

It's supervised self driving and texting in the driver's seat is currently illegal in every state. FSD 14 is amazing and I'd argue it's better than the average human but you're texting and YOU kill someone while your Tesla is in FSD, a life is forever erased, you go to jail, Tesla's progress is erased because of regulation and bad publicity. We have almost reached unsupervised FSD and you can do all the texting you want. DO NOT TEXT while using SUPERVISED FSD. You are operating the vehicle and are 100% liable for any mistakes

You know how just 18% of owners use FSD, the above are comments from the other 78%. FSD will always be better than a drunk driver or a teen texting. That’s good enough for me. 😁

Overthinking it a bit. It’s not illogical what you’re saying but the probability of an issue is way way low
