It's worth mentioning that Trump was not inert during the trouble. He was in contact with the Pentagon and they assured him that troops were on the way. That was one of the key charges leveled against him. He was like Nero, letting Rome burn. That didn't happen. He was deceived by the Pentagon that help was on its way.

The facts all show this is NOT true: - The only one who officially requested assistance from the National Guard was mayor Bowser. She was granted 340 soldiers before the event and 1100 during it. - There were no official requests or offers from Trump. The DC national guard is run by the Pentagon, and therefore, the President. Trump could have deployed them if he gave an official order, which there is NO record of. - Donald Trump’s own defense secretary, who is part of the chain of command for National Guard troop requests, testified UNDER OATH, that Trump had never signed an order to deploy National Guard troops to the Capitol. - MAGA ally, Kash Patel claimed Trump ordered the national guard. Colorado Judge Wallace found that Kash Patel is “not a credible witness”. - Chief Sund, Capitol Police Officer, says he requested assistance six times ahead of and during the attack on the Capitol. Each of those requests was denied or delayed. - US Secret Service assistant director Tony Ornato told the committee in January 2022 he overheard conversation between Mark Meadows and DC Mayor Bowers that the President had approved 10,000 National Guard troops for January 6th Rally. The problem is that this is hearsay and Trump NEVER officially called up the National guard. There would be evidence that he did. Today marks 5 years since the attack on our Capitol on January 6. There have been a lot of efforts to rewrite history, but I was there that day. The building that represents American democracy was attacked by a violent mob, incited by President Trump, with the goal of preventing the certification of the 2020 election. Five U.S. Capitol and DC Metropolitan police officers lost their lives as a result of January 6, by heart attack and by suicide. Today, I stopped by U.S. Capitol Police headquarters to thank them for their service five years ago. As I stood in their operations center, it was surreal and sobering: on the big screens behind them were TV stations replaying footage of the attack five years ago, side by side with a live coverage of a protest today on the National Mall, led by Proud Boys who had been found guilty of violence on January 6th, and pardoned this year by Trump. And on yet other screens, reports of how the White House was trying to claim that January 6th was "a hoax." Despite everything they face, the Capitol Police continue to protect lawmakers and our Capitol, including providing me with 24/7 security for the past month after a raft of new threats over the past few weeks. We owe the Capitol Police a debt of gratitude for what they sacrificed for democracy back in January 6, 2021, and for their loss of life. And we certainly owe it to them, on this anniversary, to tell the true story of what happened for the history books.
