you can save whatever's visible in the DOM — will look into improving it further but not sure what's possible without getting hacky since there's no API anymore?

How is the web clipper compared to Readwise? I have been using the latter for saving and annotating websites.

I haven't used Readwise, but I would guess they serve somewhat different purposes since Web Clipper is only focused on websites and doesn't have built-in annotation yet, only highlighting Web Clipper is stronger at capturing data that you want to archive or manipulate, see
