Here's a quick peek at the new lighting in Island Architect! Feels really nice to see the lighting react as you build houses, edit the terrain or watch time pass. The new solution has bounced lighting and reflections, all without relying on ray tracing hardware.

Ray Reconstruction uses AI to improve the quality of ray-traced lighting, reflections, and shadows. Can you see the difference? Here's a hint: Look at the scene after the lighter turns off. On the bottom, shadows and lighting updates appear slower and less precise. On the top, the scene settles into darkness more naturally.

How is Ridge Racer Type 4 even real... 🥲 It pushes PS1 to its limits - the lighting, the textures, the specular reflections on the cars... it looks miles ahead of most of the games on the platform. The game's vibes, music and aesthetics are also incredible.

SpecNeRF: Gaussian Directional Encoding for Specular Reflections paper page: Neural radiance fields have achieved remarkable performance in modeling the appearance of 3D scenes. However, existing approaches still struggle with the view-dependent appearance of glossy surfaces, especially under complex lighting of indoor environments. Unlike existing methods, which typically assume distant lighting like an environment map, we propose a learnable Gaussian directional encoding to better model the view-dependent effects under near-field lighting conditions. Importantly, our new directional encoding captures the spatially-varying nature of near-field lighting and emulates the behavior of prefiltered environment maps. As a result, it enables the efficient evaluation of preconvolved specular color at any 3D location with varying roughness coefficients. We further introduce a data-driven geometry prior that helps alleviate the shape radiance ambiguity in reflection modeling. We show that our Gaussian directional encoding and geometry prior significantly improve the modeling of challenging specular reflections in neural radiance fields, which helps decompose appearance into more physically meaningful components.

here is a video of DLSS5 ON/OFF on my own webcam using OBS + Reshade + a DLSS feeder. it basically gives professional lighting. this is really cool.

SVG filters provide a basic lighting system you can sync with a little JavaScript and use in your web apps 💡 ... not as powerful but pretty cool

Here's another little showcase of the pitches. The problematic thing is that the pitches for the lower settings use a very different texture style, which is a bit of a thorn in my side. Aside from that, the lighting is way overtuned. I'll post a screenshot in the next post.

Here's another stadium import video, but with lighting on two sides!! It's so freaking nice to get to do this in real time as well! Let's keep pushing now as the #FM26 community 🫶 Keep in mind this is a shit mockup, so the potential is 10x higher!!

I'm testing a new technique: I'm texturing a 3D model with an AI video texture that changes based on the player's viewing angle. This allows for real-time dynamic lighting on the character and is highly optimized. The test is running in standalone VR. WIP.

Bernardo Bertolucci on the importance of Lighting in movies: "I’ve always been struck by the fact that we remember much more about the lighting of the films we love that about the story line. For instance there’s a 'Rules of the Game' (1939) lighting, which is an absolutely prophetic lighting, which foretells the coming war. And there’s a 'Voyage in Italy' (1954) lighting, which is not the conventional light of Southern Italy that you find in 'Salvatore Giuliano' (1962), for example, but which is a light “invented” by Rossellini. Then there’s the lighting of 'Breathless' (1960), which remains for our generation the most characteristic lighting of the ’6os. Maybe now there’s a 'Before the Revolution' lighting." (Bernardo Bertolucci's interview with Jean-André Fieschi, 1968) Clip from: Salvatore Giuliano (1962) Director: Francesco Rosi
