Iñárritu wanted his advice as it was the first time he was directing a comedy. When he told Nicholls about the plot of the movie and the way he intended to shoot it, Nicholls replied, "Alejandro, you should stop now. You are running to disaster. A comedy is made on cutting. You cut from one place to the other. These actors are not comedy actors. They know nothing about theater." Then Nichols told Iñárritu everything about the genre. Iñárritu was terrified as he felt that Nichols was absolutely right. When Iñárritu returned to the set, Edward Norton, who was really excited asked him how the meeting went, he replied, "It was great". Iñárritu took Nichols' advice constructively.
