Leadership climate is set at the top. So, when President Trump calls for me to be killed and hanged, many people take that as license to call my office and say even worse. But what has been so heartening is that even more called in with positive feedback and encouragement. There are many here in Washington who want us to think that America is hopelessly divided. I refuse to accept that. There is more that unites us than divides us, any day of the week. And we can’t be intimidated out of advocating for the country we all love.

And the way I always think about that is: Is there a 10x change happening in the technology landscape? Is something 10x faster, 10x cheaper, or 10x better? If it’s not 10x, we as both VCs and entrepreneurs have to ask ourselves if it’s really worth doing because it’s really hard to start new companies . . . Existing companies are usually pretty good at what they do. So for a new company to exist, it has to bring a product to market that’s so much better than what exists that it punches through the status quo.” The third is the team: “Is the team outstanding? . . . You want to have a founding team of complementary skillsets. You want to have at least one super strong technologist — quite possibly more than one. Some of the best startups are actually more than one founding technologist. ELON: IF THERE’S NO FILTER TO IMMIGRATION, HOW DO YOU KNOW WHO’S COMING IN? "I'm very much in favor of legal immigration. I think that generally, I think one should welcome to a country anyone who is willing to work hard, is honest, has high integrity and will add to any given country. If somebody is an asset to the country, why not have them join? That's obviously a great thing to do. I think that's great. But if it's illegal immigration and there's no filter, how do you know who's coming in? You don't know. So, you have to have some basis for saying somebody should come in or not come in. And my argument is, it should be a very simple basis. Will they add to the country? Will they be a productive part of the economy? Do they admire the culture? Do they want to join because of the culture? Then, that's great. But if there's no process for that, then you don't know. And I want to be careful because my words will be misconstrued. I'm not saying all illegal immigrants are bad. Perhaps most of them are good. But if there's no process for reviewing, not at all, then how can you say that everyone who is an illegal immigrant is going to be honest and hard-working?
