Here’s the problem with Supergirl and DC Studios.

another problem James Gunn has Is that he needs to stop focusing on side characters and focus on characters people really want to see like Batman and Wonder woman then go crazy. Its Crazy to me that Wonder woman movie and Batman in this universe haven't been fast-tracked.

Basically..

I would argue this all started with Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Like I specifically remember how hype I was when Gordon handed Batman the joker playing card at the end of Batman begins and the nod to robin in the 3rd movie whether it made sense or not it was a reason to comeback.

I like Milly Alcock, and I like Supergirl. But I had no desire to pay to see Guardians of The Galaxy flavor Supergirl after I saw that trailer... Honestly, I was legit more hype to watch CW Supergirl weekly after seeing it premiered at Comic Con than I was after seeing the trailer/clips from this 🤣🤣. That being said, I'll wait til it's on Max to watch

Say what you want about Zack Snyder but you could tell that even he understood the idea about long term storytelling. You could tell from Man of Steel, to BvS, to Wonder Woman, to Justice League, he had a goal. He had a long term vision for each movie leading to Justice League 3

I agree with this, but then there’s a split in the community. Some people like self-contained stories without interconnectedness. I like everything connected to a bigger story. Therefore, I also feel like the audience needs to figure out what they want & pick a side

Nailed it. No notes. At this point, Supergirl would have made more sense if it was directly tied to Superman by having him discover her at the end of his film and then loosely adapting something like Batman/Superman comic where he find her. Sub Batman w/ another hero or plot device, sub the darkseid mind control with another villain instead (hell do a Granny Goodness/Glorious Godfrey) or which then would lead into a proper 3rd Superman film with them teamed up to stop Brainiac. That would be a cohesive narrative which introduces the audience to the characters as they get acquainted in real time. I’m not even saying I would want this because I am not a fan of Gunn’s approach but this would at least make sense. I personally would want a Supergirl film that is a proper origin akin to how she was handled in the Superman: The Animated Series OR something wildly different like her w/ the Legion of Superheroes and a dimensional time travel story.

My thing is you have to prioritize your main hitters (Superman, Batman & WW) over everything else. Build your foundation, give us a the JL and from there you can start to give us characters the casual audience might not be familiar with but at least you have something set.

I mean it’s little bit too early to make this claim. After peacemaker it seems like they are doing Salvation. With the bigger plot point being teased in Lanterns I think the bane and deathstoke movie takes place on salvation Idk about the Jimmy Olsen show tho

Brother I think we just gotta let them cook tho... I don't want or need to be spoon fed the plan. Worked for MCU but it doesn't mean comic book universes HAVE to do that template every time. It's already stagnant too. Let's just live in this universe and let it breathe for a sec

Goatee rob has entered the chat! Lol

The problem isn’t the choice of projects. The problem is the quality and cost. They should have focused on an A24 or HBO style writing and film making. But this supergirl failure shows they paid no attention to demand.

PREACH! Gunn & Safron have made the mantra, "We're not doing like how Marvel did it" a priority over the audience's expectation of long form storytelling. And it's a shame because DC has so many epic/event stories to pull from. They are cutting their nose to spite their face.✌🏾

All of that. At some point you have to meet the already set expectations.

Wait i thought this guy died or am i mixing him up with soneone else.

Rob I hear you bro but let’s be real. There were ppl killing that film b4 it ever came out. It never had a chance honestly .

I think the issue was, first and foremost, that the movie just wasn’t very good. And secondly, there are some people who have a bias against female led movies. Especially when they hear a narrative that she is left leaning.

Agreed. The lack of story scale makes these films not feel grand. Supergirl could have felt Grand and made note of Braniac. Even the first Superman could have made note of Braniac to add scale and urgency. Something anything

Weren’t the people just bitching with Marvel about trying to make everything connect and that everything doesn’t have to connect? Also in the end credits of Superman it literally connects to supergirl….

If that's the case then here's my question. Weren't folks just a few years ago complaining about how these films all had to lead to something that we stopped making good self contained super hero movies ?

Peacemaker season 2 helped with what happened after Superman so it’s not really on its own the worlds coming together you really do have to watch the shows as well.

Well for once I agree with Rob 👍🏾 to an extent. What I don't agree is Kara isn't Kal-El and they're not similar not one bit. Now they're powers are the same yes but personality and outlook on things are totally different. Now in my review I've stated this version of Kara wasn't the best version for the general casual audience.

Supergirl is the movie you make when you are swimming in money, not when you are on the verge of being sold off.

To be fair, the DCU met the audience where they were when they introduced the character at the end of Superman.

Good video. Is there any chance to make casuals unlearn this desire for the post credit scenes and the hand holding? You are right about it being self contained, it was a welcomed change but Idk. Is this also what happens when you want Supes to grow this verse?

Dawg people keep talking abt phase 1 like it gave the amount of motion they have now to nerds and people in the comic sphere yes phase 1 was big but besides iron man nobody gave af o remember being in theaters to see Thor it was all guys you’d see modding on Reddit

@Motetsu3653 The problem was that it was written by woke activist based on a terrible tom king story.

DC is Campy but not a Man Child fest the writing in the DCU so far its overtly childish at times and that turns off general audiences.

I totally agree! But I guess me going to the movies to check out Supergirl is my way of giving DCU a chance...but I'm really on the attitude of catch it on streaming due to the fails of Superman and Supergirl roll outs

Yea…James Gunn and his partners just don’t have what it takes to create a real universe with the movies and characters having ties to each other like Marvel movies do. Gunn is just putting out movies for the sake of putting out movies. He set DC back 15+ years.

Also a big problem with Hollywood currently is the Studios spent the entire Pandemic period & beyond telling everyone that Streaming is the future & just as important as film, now they're back to pretending Streaming doesn't exist! FilmExecs don't care about Streaming popularity!

They need to do the ultimate series

expanding on the lack of a plan: with this movie, there were no characters that mattered to the greater world except Kara, Lobo, and Clark. It's movie #2 and it introduced NOTHING. That little girl? the bad guys? Random aliens? None of them matter, and they were the whole movie

Very well said and I tend to agree. Like Supergirl doesn’t even have a post credits. They could’ve just don’t something simple like Lobo flying through space with his motorcycle and space dolphins toward a bounty suggesting we might see him again. People need to be drip fed.
