Here’s the time-lapse I promised you from yesterday’s solar activity. Complete with Earth to scale and a bonus of the sun’s rotation. This is easily one of my cleanest time-lapses I’ve managed over such a long period. Enjoy!

I was completely unaware you could get images like this from Earth (Especially with atmosphere distortion). I would have thought this would be a space-based telescope that captured this. I am absolutely blown away!

You can it’s just a lot of work! Each frame of this video is made from 500 individual 16-bit photos, stacked to average out the perturbations and then sharpened

Makes me think how the universe is so hostile really. We’re pretty lucky to have ended up on a nice warm protected oxygen bubble.

This is the first I've seen "consumer-grade" sun recording, or any sun recording outside of like an observatory or satellite How do you stop the brightness from just exploding your sensor lol, what filters do you use?

Lots of filters! The daystar quark chromosphere and baader ERF do the heavy lifting of protecting the sensor.

Have you tried focusing this on mars or Venus? If you can get this kind of clarity from the sun “much further away” than those two planetary bodies then it should be easy right? Do you have any of those?

Yeah I’ve shot them in detail, but the planets are far smaller so I’m not able to make as high resolution of an image. Just look at the earth compared to these features, now imagine how much more magnification I’d need to see details of the continents.
