Another young life has been lost on Mahalunge's roads, and residents say the real fault lies not with any driver, but with years of civic neglect. On Wednesday night, September 2, around 11:18 pm, 26-year-old Shrihari, a resident of VTP Alpine, passed away near the Zepto outlet on the road connecting Mahalunge Village to VTP and Godrej Township. According to details, the road was muddy and poorly lit due to a broken, non-functional streetlight, leading to extremely low visibility on the stretch. It is learnt that Shrihari lost his balance and fell on the poor road surface, and a truck coming from the opposite direction was unable to avoid him in time due to the darkness, resulting in the fatal collision. Residents stress that neither the truck driver nor anyone else was at fault — the real cause was the lack of proper road conditions and street lighting in the area. This is the second such tragedy in Mahalunge within just over two weeks. On August 17, an 11-year-old boy passed away near Durga Cafe, opposite Green Coat Society, after falling from his father's bike on a similarly slushy, pothole-riddled road and coming under a dumper truck. A 32-year-old woman was killed after the motorcycle on which she was travelling lost control while trying to avoid a pothole at Ananthanagar near Hebbagodi in Anekal taluk on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The deceased, Medha, a native of Kerala, was working at the Provident Fund office in Electronic City. She was travelling as a pillion rider with her friend Ajay Guru when the accident occurred. According to the information available, a car travelling ahead of the motorcycle suddenly applied brakes while attempting to avoid a pothole. The motorcycle rider reportedly lost control of the vehicle and Medha, who was seated on the pillion, fell onto the road. At the same time, a goods vehicle coming from behind ran over her neck. She suffered severe injuries and died on the spot. The accident triggered anger among local residents, who staged a protest at the spot and blocked the road. Residents alleged that several roads in and around Electronic City were in poor condition and riddled with potholes. They demanded immediate action from the authorities to repair the damaged roads and prevent further accidents. Residents also lit candles and paid tribute to Medha. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety and the condition of roads in the rapidly developing Electronic City-Anekal corridor. Hebbagodi police visited the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered at the Electronic City traffic police station, and further investigation is under way.

Potholes, BMC apathy take yet another life! Two days ago Arun Tiwari went to get petrol filled at around 10 pm. While returning home through the badly lit stretch near Mumbai University post office, he hit a pothole and lost his balance. Before he could steady himself, a BEST bus hit him from behind. Tiwari was taken to VN Desai hospital. He had already lost a lot of blood already. His family requested that he be given an oxygen cylinder and also asked for an ambulance to take him to Lilavati for further treatment. VN Desai hospital, a BMC hospital, didn't have an oxygen cylinder to spare. The family had to wait for an ambulance for more than half an hour. When he was eventually taken to Lilavati, they could not save him as he had lost most of the blood in his body. The entire stretch of road near Mumbai University from Vakola upto Kurla sees several accidents every week due to potholes. The maintenance of the stretch suffers while BMC and MMRDA continue to spar over whose jurisdiction it is. Meanwhile people keep dying. After Arun's death, it was left to locals to put gunny bags over the pothole as a temporary measures, none of the authorities were around. Arun Tiwari was a victim of systemic apathy. Potholes, a road without proper lighting, a BMC hospital that did not have an ambulance or oxygen cylinder on standby - at every step, Arun Tiwari was left to fend for himself with his dying breath. Arun Tiwari, Ramdhan Yadav, Soham Khatre...to this government they are mere statistics. I demand that the urban development minister Eknath Shinde - एकनाथ शिंदे step in and immediately fix this issue of handover of road maintenance between माझी Mumbai, आपली BMC and MMRDA so that the maintenance of SCLR, CST Road, Hans Bhugra road and other roads in the Kalina Vakola stretch is done regularly. We are currently undertaking the reconstruction of the Imodi–Imosan Road in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun East Senatorial District as part of our sustained efforts to expand quality infrastructure and improve connectivity across Ogun State. This important road serves several communities, and its rehabilitation is aimed at restoring safe, smooth, and reliable access for residents and commuters who depend on it daily. For a long time, the poor condition of this corridor limited movement, increased travel time, and created difficulties for residents and commuters. The ongoing works, being executed to durable engineering standards, will ease transportation, improve safety, stimulate local activities, and enhance the overall quality of life in the area. This is one of the worst stretches in Bengaluru, and unfortunately, this is not the first time it has been waterlogged. Year after year, every time heavy rain hits the city, this underpass turns into a lake, causing severe inconvenience to commuters, damaging vehicles, and putting lives at risk. Despite repeated incidents and countless complaints from citizens, nothing seems to have changed. The most frustrating part is that this problem is entirely predictable. Authorities know exactly what happens here during every monsoon, yet there appears to be no permanent solution or effective drainage system in place. Instead, residents and daily commuters are forced to suffer the same ordeal repeatedly while promises of infrastructure improvements remain on paper. Citizens pay taxes expecting better roads, proper stormwater management, and safe public infrastructure. However, situations like this raise serious questions about planning, accountability, and maintenance. How many more years will people have to endure the same issue before meaningful action is taken? A city aspiring to be a global technology hub cannot afford to have critical roads and underpasses flooded after every spell of rain.
