Please mentor other teachers. We need more people like you. I would have been a much better student if I had you many moons ago.

It's essentially the same as the difference between learning various mathematical concepts (we were all forced to learn algebra), to understanding how they can actually be APPLIED in real day to day life....and yes, algebra really DOES serve a purpose for many of us.

Higher order thinking is so crucial, and this facilitates and enhances that. I cannot tell you how much I love this approach! 💕🙌

Why were you not my teacher for my entire educational process. I feel like I would have learned so much more and maybe reached a higher potential

B👏🏻I👏🏻N👏🏻G👏🏻O👏🏻 if my middle/high school history was taught like that I might have taken it in college. You need to know what to discuss why. A good teacher gets twice the info thru their students. Not just what but what & why. Works in other disciplines too, science & even math

I had two inspiring teachers when I was in high school. One was my English teacher who is now a friend. The other was my history teacher who turned out to be my best mentor ever. Thank you, Joanna, to you and all who teach!

It's far from education, it's called indoctrination.

Unlearn16's profile picture
Unlearn162 years ago

What are you talking about? How can debate and critical analysis be indoctrination? Lol

Is there anything about who started animal rights? Who were the bulshevik jews? 109? Canadian camels? The love triangle that lost Quebec?

You are asking if I cover ALL world history??? Are you ok? My first lesson to my students is always - don't just criticize the information in front of you, be sure to understand why so much is omitted.

DeeEmm's profile picture

@JimKell10668618 World History...most of History is Eurocentric. And I say most.

Unlearn16's profile picture
Unlearn162 years ago

@JimKell10668618 Of course it is. Ontario's World History course is specifically called 'The West and The World'. Most courses will have a bias towards the culture they are created within. As students get older and expand their knowledge they can gain other perspectives.

@JimKell10668618 Then we are in agreement.

Unlearn16's profile picture
Unlearn162 years ago

@JimKell10668618 The very first lesson I teach in every single course is the politics and control of what the government 'omitted' from the course. It doesn't make the information problematic - only incomplete. And in all fairness, every course would be incomplete to some degree

I loved history class in high school and I’ve often said that if I won a lottery I would spend my days taking history classes! If you taught history via zoom I’d be a happy person!

And THAT prepares them for college/university, settin them up for success and not failure. Making them responsible to be prepared to actually LEARN. 👏

WOW! Wish I had Teachers who gave us such organized instruction/information at beginning of class! What you described is like an “outline” that’s used in the beginning of a book report or something…

I had a lot of bad teachers in my life. Catholic schools ugh. You must be popular among those students.

Donna Petrich's profile picture

Everything I tried to memorize in school for tests etc I couldn’t retain so I usually forgot! However, things I actually learned I usually retained! I often tried to explain that I felt memorizing wasn’t always learning! Teachers didn’t like that…

You remind me of my favourite history teacher. He did all of this and more . I competed on his Great Canadian History Team in grade 10, coached that team for my remaining years in high school and came back each year during university and beyond. to coach for him

Brilliant! I was taught the What, seldom the Why. I am 66 and finally reading our history to understand the Why, sometimes the How.

My daughter’s history teacher always played music from the era. He also made every student love history with facts you can’t get in the textbook. Somehow I feel you are doing the same for your students ❤️. Thank you for giving of yourself to teach our children ❤️

History was my favourite class and I had a fantastic teacher but wow I’m jealous of Joanna’s students. They’re so fortunate to have someone this inspiring and thought-provoking, with so much dedication and kindness moulding young minds🙌

I agree with you, I wish this could be done early, like elementary, my kids got sooo bored with the same subject or period in History, that only because I told them it would be different and gave them some examples they took World History in HS.

As kid, I thought of it as "what happened before" but it's the same thing. "What happened before that lead to the next thing?" History is a great topic to study for anyone trying to understand how and why something happened, not just what occurred once it did.
