Blake Edwards on the conditions he laid out before accepting to direct "A Shot in the Dark" (1964): "'A Shot in the Dark' (1964) is nothing like Marcel Archard’s play, that’s for a start. I was asked to save the situation. They had quite a bit of money involved in this project. Peter Sellers was threatening to pull out because he didn’t like the screenplay. He said that the only way he would continue with the project would be if I took it over. I said that the only way I could possibly take it over, under such emergency conditions, would be that I would not be obliged to do anything like Archard’s play because a) I didn’t like it, b) I thought it was not a motion picture and c) I wasn’t ready to make a movie at that point. So they asked me what I wanted to do because the picture had to start in something like four weeks. I said that if they wanted me to save them, I’d have to take something with which I was familiar to begin with. I was familiar with the character of Clouseau. I needed a detective, somebody to solve a murder. I couldn’t throw the whole thing out. I had to use the idea that the maid was accused of killing the chaffeur and this had to be solved. So I thought that Peter Sellers was just the natural thing and that now I was going to try to be as broad with the character as I could be. “How far can I go now in terms of Inspector Clouseau?” I wrote the screenplay and was on the stage in four weeks with it. Fortunately, it turned out to be a reasonably funny movie. It proved something for me—that if a gag is well-designed you can pull it off." Paul Sorvino, who played Paulie in Goodfellas, nearly backed out of the film two days before production. The self-described “softie” had spent months agonizing over the role, convinced he didn’t have what it took to play a mafia boss. He explains… “I didn’t think I could do it, because it was not the kind of role that I felt I really had an affinity for. The externals were easy: middle-aged Italian man. The difficulty was in the lethality that I felt I didn’t possess. And so even though I wanted to do it, I was sort of faking when I went to the meeting and giving Martin the impression that I knew exactly what to do with it - when I had no idea what to do with it. But I wanted so much to be in a Scorsese movie. I guess he just figured I was capable of it. It was about two months of preparation to try to get this quality that I knew it called for. I was kind of agonizing over it - I was thinking, “I’m gonna ruin this movie.” I was looking for something to get out of it till two days before we started production. By virtue of constantly searching to find that kind of quality that killers have, I was preparing to go out one night, passed by the mirror to check for spinach in the teeth, and I jumped back. I literally frightened myself. I saw a look in my eyes that frightened me. ‘Who was that?’ I said, ‘That’s Paulie.’ And once I found it, the role became just a duck in water. It just was so easy to do.”

STAR WARS hit screens on this day in 1977. It was one of the first films I saw in the theater. Because it was in theaters for over a year (like RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK would be four years later), I can’t be sure if I saw it in 1977 or 1978, but I do know that I was very young. I remember going with my mom, that it was a matinee, and that we sat in the middle. The seats stand out to me because I remember I had to use the restroom in the middle of the climactic battle scene :) I’d see it multiple times in the theater over its run and would see THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI on their opening weekends. And yes, I remember the marketing for the third film when it was called REVENGE OF THE JEDI. If you did not live through it, it is hard to describe the STAR WARS mania that gripped the country in 1977 and lasted through RETURN OF THE JEDI in 1983. From lines at the theaters to toys to costumes to books to the infamous 1978 STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL, it was an amazing time to be a kid and witness the magic of the movies firsthand through a phenomenon you knew was something extremely special. I can’t be 100% sure that STAR WARS was my first movie in the theater, as during that timeframe I also saw WATERSHIP DOWN (traumatic) and THE RESCUERS (dark) as a double feature with my dad (we had to travel to a city and I found a 9mm bullet in the street – a bullet I still have today), CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND with my grandmother (where I tripped running to the theater with a bowl of popcorn that was almost bigger than I was and spilling it all over the hallway - and I remember how nice the guy was behind the counter who gave us another one for free), and a double feature of ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN and THE BLACK HOLE, but in looking at the dates of those two films I think it was after STAR WARS and that the theater paired an older film (ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN – 1975) with a new film (THE BLACK HOLE – 1979). I just watched the original three films with my youngest son, and it brings me right back…probably the closest I can get to a time machine.

“This year you won Monaco, you won Silverstone, and you won the World Championship. What else is there left to do?” Lando: “I mean, they're really the best ones. Just downhill from here. I would have loved to make my life a bit easier and winning just earlier next time. But it's always more exciting when it kind of goes down to the final race, final few laps. It's more exciting for everyone, for you guys most of all. But I won ones that, again, people have dreamt of winning. There are some of the most incredible ones. The lap I did in Monaco in quali was the only other time, probably in the last 10 years, that I cried a little bit over something. Because there I proved myself wrong. It was one other moment this season that I proved myself wrong. Because I had that bad run of results. I just couldn't perform in qualifying. Qualifying has always been my strong suit, my best. Yeah, it's been my strength since I was in karting. All my qualifying results are my thing and they weren’t at the beginning of the season. So, when I went to the hardest track to do a qualifying lap in, I turned off my delta for the first time that weekend. So, I couldn't see if I was on a better lap, worse lap, whatever it was. It's not been my best track in the past. For me to then to go there and put that lap I put in at the end of qualifying was one of the best moments of my career in a way because it was the time I almost doubted myself the most ever. In the most important season that it turned out to be. So, but that one lap, 1 minute 9 seconds was all it needed for me to flip everything and turn that thought of ‘I just don't know if I got this’ to ‘oh, I can definitely do this.’ And that was a pivotal moment for me up here.”

And I felt like booking the best hotel for her to sleep in, so I did. That day, she kept looking at the view from the hotel, and I saw her reaction. She said, “Mama has never slept in a hotel like this in my whole life. Mama has been working since the age of 14, performing Chinese opera to provide for the family. I never thought I’d have something like this. Never thought I’d have a beautiful home or get to ride in nice cars.” And it resonated with me, especially since Pa passed away. When Mama says things like that, (it is) true. What I had planned was just one (more) year until Pa and Ma could retire… (but) it was too late. Even if it was just one year or one day, it was too late. Success can wait for tomorrow, (but) if they are not there tomorrow, then it is too late. So, I felt like, “Hey, when can I make her happy?” To be honest, the new house that I built for her, where she can do this and that, is finished. The renovations are all done. The cats have moved in. (She?) has a role as the pillar of the house. So, I feel that the car… I had bought one before, but that time, I had to thank the fans. But this time, it came from (my own) hard work. I want it to be something that makes Mama happy. I know that I bought a car, and she can’t drive it, but I want her to see that I am starting… I want her to see that I have succeeded.

I also asked about the injuries he had suffered "It was my hip, my left shoulder; my last two pay-per-view matches—pretty much the left side of my body was useless. But I wasn't going to tell the doctors that because that's not how I was brought up. In not just in real life, but in this business. When I had that time off, I had a lot of time to reflect and it made me angry. Now I look back on it and I shouldn't have been angry at the fans. Who I should have been angry was that myself. Because I went from being, ‘MJF is the best thing since sliced bread,’ and within a flip of a switch, ‘It's MJF sucks. Hate to be that guy but it needs to be said. Tesla has not yet solved FSD and there is no guarantee it will be solved by June Don't misunderstand me, I'm not predicting it won't be ready. I'm simply reminding a specific group of people that seem to be operating under the assumption it's already a done deal If it was truly solved, we would have Unsupervised. Yes, it's incredible 99% of the time but cracking the code for the final 1% is excruciatingly difficult While we're on the subject - does FSD pull out in front of people and then take its good old time for anyone else? This is a behavior I'm really not a fan of and seems to happen regularly for me on 13.2.8 and 13.2.7 (AI4) We still don't have answers for sun glare - I watch an unhealthy amount of FSD videos and I still see this happening more than I'd like to Yes, snow is another story but initially this isn't really part of the rollout plan for TX and CA. Makes sense to solve for better conditions first Lane selection is still an issue where I'm at as you can see in this clip. Wish I would have had my camera ready for this but I was using FSD and the navigation just needed to go straight through the intersection. Instead, for no reason, it got into the left lane (left turn only) and stayed there. When I got the green arrow it just sat at the light (luckily no one was behind me so I stayed for a bit) and I eventually took over and just made the left turn You'd think basic things like this would be solved by now. Maybe it's the map data but even if it is, that's still a problem This will undoubtedly get misinterpreted and that's fine, but I've felt like some caution around Unsupervised would be healthy for certain pockets of the $TSLA community I'm still as confident as ever that Tesla will be the first to solve for generalized autonomy and I don't think it's close (especially in the US), but there's at least a non-zero percent chance it happens later than this June

Alejandro Amenábar on the non-linear structure of 'Open Your Eyes' (1997) & the challenges he faced because of it: "Interviewer: What did you want the puzzle structure of 'Open Your Eyes' to accomplish? Amenábar: That was something I had rejected in my short films, because I'm not very fond of jumps in time and flashbacks and flash-forwards. In this case, it was inevitable. I could have made the movie in a linear fashion, but I felt that would have resulted in three stories that were not integrated. So my co-writer Mateo Gil and I decided to mix them up so we could have the whole puzzle integrated. Then the task would be for the audience to put all the pieces together. But that wasn't really my style, playing with time. While I was shooting it, I decided that my next film would have the same kinds of questions for the audience to answer, but in a completely different form, with a very simple line through the narrative. Interviewer: How do you keep viewers disoriented while still holding their attention? Was that the big challenge of making a film like Open Your Eyes? Amenábar: Yes, but I don't know if I actually achieved it. [Laughs.] I know the film made a lot of money in Spain and struck a chord with a lot of young people. In 'Open Your Eyes', it wasn't as easy to play with suspense as it was in my other two films. I tried to create a hypnotic atmosphere in every single scene that would lead the audience through a deliberately confusing story. Also, the film is strongly tied to the main character's point of view. It's much trickier, but when you're telling a story in a straight line through time, you don't have to worry as much about losing the audience." mc: during wlgyt, a poster with chungseob's back reveal and i ask staff who was that but they didn't answer me. they didn't tell us until the end even we ask who is the actor behind it but no answer, it is bcs it's was a spoiler that needs a tight security? seonho: the director talk to me during our last team dinner that they made something like an album or something "i didn't include chungseob because i was afraid it would be a spoiler," he said. mc: your first appearance was during the closet scene right? and i was like oh? i know that actor is let me find it later but still i didn't recognize you. seonho: back then, it took almost 4 hours each time just to get the makeup and styling done. they had to attach each strand of hair one by one. so we put an incredible amount of time and effort into it and in a way, i was actually happy that people didn't recognize me. mc: and during the time that you asked permission for marriage you made a cute scene like- jungie: abonim~ mc: i heard that there's a lot of adlibs. seonho: it was bcs the director instructed me where to where to walk as other actors need to be seen on camera angles, so ofc the actors need to be on angle and while having their scene i came in while thinking 'i need to be close to my father in law while smiling' and then i started to walk towards them so i did the slapstick to fill in the gaps.. just like we do during rehearsal and the good thing about this is we filmed when IU said the "omonim~" first and i remember it to clearly and do it the same.
