I took a few weeks off because I was getting to a point where I was dreading going to the studio…I thought about what I actually want to do, what would intrigue me? It struck me that I wanted to do something a little more ego-less. Individuality is what appeals to me more [than celebrity]. I’m looking to carve out my own island and I’m less concerned with how immediately big I can make that island…I’m focusing on the artistry.”

Had to give this its own post. Excuse me while I ramble … Been thinking a lot about what Jamie Lee Curtis asked - what does it mean to me to be respected in my line of work? Honestly? I’m shocked I was able to keep it together on the spot to give a coherent response that I actually feel pretty good about but now that I’ve had more time to sit with it - being respected means everything because I know the work I’m putting out is truly me. It took me time to find my voice in this space and to pinpoint what I wanted to bring to it. When I found it, I didn’t let it go. There’s endless pressure nudging journalists in one direction or another, and yes, we all have to evolve and adapt a bit, but when I figured out the key values that were guiding my compass most, those became a non-negotiable guiding light. So the idea of being respected really does mean the world because I’m just being myself, doing work I genuinely love and take great pride in.

If I take alcohol and partying out of the equation, and basketball, I’m literally a newborn baby again. So I really sat down and figured out, what are some things that I like?” “I had to assess myself, and I realized I was a mentor. I really like doing this. I really like talking. I really like helping the younger generation, or even helping others.” “For the past seven years, I’ve been teaching financial literacy to athletes. I enjoy doing stuff like that.” “Now I’m trying to get in the public speaking space because my story is not a basketball story. I never really got to explain this journal clearly so I’m going to start being transparent, this journal was gifted to me in October of last year when I started to learn how clothes are made. I decided to document everything I’ve been learning by writing and putting Polaroids in it. I’ve carried this with me ever since and what I have started doing is scanning the pages and putting them online for anyone else learning about clothing. I’m grateful for who I’ve met and what I’m continuously learning. I feel like I need to share it with you guys.
