Chioma, I get where you're coming from, I really do and it’s understandable. You're trying to protect people with HIV from feeling ashamed or depressed, and that's fair point and compassionate. No one should be made to feel horrible about their health. Here's my honest take HIV is a serious, incurable virus even if medication can manage it really well. Once I know someone has it, I would keep my physical distance, no matter how close we are as friends or whatever. I will still support you emotionally, check in, send money if I can afford it to help with medicines or needs, or talk on the phone. But actually being around you in person, especially in ways that could involve any risk? No, I wouldn’t do that. People die from this, and life doesn't give do overs like life has no duplicate. A lot of what doctors and public health experts say publicly like don't be afraid or treat these people with HIV normally is partly to keep them from spiraling into depression or isolation. But if you asked those same experts privately, Would you let your own daughter/son marry or date someone with HIV? I bet most wouldn't go for it once they knew the full status. That's just human nature. I'm not twisting my words or trying to make these with the virus feel bad I’m just saying the reality of things that you and I know, If I find out someone is HIV positive, even if they're on treatment, I will step way back from any close contact. My life and health come first for me. The only exceptions would be if it was my future wife or my own kids family ties like that might change things. For anyone else? I will wish them well from a distance. You can disagree with me all you want, and that's cool. But this is my boundary and my choice. It doesn't mean I hate people with HIV or want them to suffer it just means I'm protecting myself in a situation where there's no cure if something goes wrong. On the science side since facts matter here Modern treatment has changed things a lot. If someone with HIV stays on their medication and keeps an undetectable viral load for a sustained period, major health organizations, now say there's zero risk of sexually transmitting it to a partner widely called something like U=U Undetectable = Untransmittable. That's backed by huge long term studies with no transmissions in those cases. However doesn't mean everyone hits/maintains undetectable perfectly, and it doesn't erase all caution or personal comfort levels but it's a big shift from how things were viewed 20+ years ago. So my choice is still 100% and I don’t care whatever anyone thinks of it.
