APPLEBAUM: The war in Ukraine is really fault line between democratic and autocratic worlds. Russians are trying to destroy Ukraine as a nation, they want it to disappear. As an empire, they want Ukraine to be their colony. And they understood perfectly well that by invading Ukraine, they were defying this liberal world order. They were defying the rules of post-war Europe, because in post-war Europe decision was made after 1945: we are not going to invade each other anymore, we are not going to have wars. Instead, we are going to decide everything by diplomacy, and borders will not be changed by force. And Russians understood they were breaking that norm when they invaded Ukraine. They also invaded Ukraine because Ukrainians were using that powerful democratic language we take for granted. Putin said, “If they can do it in Ukraine, then people could do it in Russia. So, I need to crush this Ukrainian democracy movement.”

I’m surprised how many people were completely unaware that the CIA were openly sharing intelligence with Ukraine. Most of the country have no idea that Ukraine is a proxy of the US. They use our money, weapons, equipment, training, intelligence, etc. The only thing that makes the Ukrainian army Ukrainian, is that they are using Ukrainian bodies instead of American ones. Thats it. Everything else in the Ukrainian military is a US/NATO product. Ukraine’s military is an army that the US/NATO built for fighting Russia indirectly. They are a pawn on a chess board, and the US/NATO view them as dispensable. That’s why Putin escalated in 2014 when the US conducted regime change in Ukraine. He knew what the US were up to. He knew the US were planning to build an army on his border. An army designed to fight Russia. He was right. Flashback to 2016, when corrupt US politicians, Graham, Klobuchar, and McCain, were in Ukraine telling the Ukrainian soldiers that the US will provide them with everything they need to go on the offensive and fight Russia. Most people around the world have no idea that the US started this war.

That they would eventually defeat Ukraine with the help of United States. And this war has an important psychological element. It’s over when Russians stop fighting and say, "We can’t defeat Ukraine. Ukraine’s not going to become part of Russia. We stop fighting, have a ceasefire, or begin to negotiate." But Americans put sort of new life into belief that Russians would win the war militarily, that Ukraine would eventually fall. It didn’t happen, mostly because of Ukrainian ingenuity, this real reinvention of modern warfare with drones. It didn’t fall because European countries stepped up to the plate and began funding Ukrainian war effort and Ukrainian economy. You have now this so-called coalition of the willing, which includes most countries in Europe, plus few others. And they’ve kept Ukrainians fighting. And Ukrainians have been holding the line for some months now.

If Russia were winning, they would have occupied more territory. If Russia were winning, they would not be bringing in North Korean fighters. If Russia were winning, they would not have had to move their logistics bases farther east. So there is no sign that they are winning.

HODGES: Unfortunately, US under this administration is no longer dependable or reliable when it comes to Russia. Trump administration is unwilling to criticize Putin, they don’t support Ukraine in any meaningful way. That's why, it's in best interest of Europe that Ukraine continues to be successful in stopping Russia. Because if Ukraine falls, then Europe has to deal with consequences, no matter what US would do or not. We shouldn't look at Russia as country we wish it to be, but as country it currently appears to be.

A Javelin is an anti-tank weapon, and those Russian tanks were obliterated. And everybody said, "What's wrong?" Because, you know, they have the satellites, right? The satellite photos, and the tanks were lined up and they weren't moving for days. And then they came to hit 'em with satellites. They were locked in quicksand, practically. It was mud like quicksand. They couldn't move. Had this Russian general just gone right up the concrete highway, they would've been in Kyiv within four hours, and there wasn't a damn thing that Ukraine was going to do about it. That war would've been over in one day. That was four and a half years ago. So that was a terrible mistake. They were totally unprepared. And then, of course, he blew up his own pipeline, the Nord Stream pipeline, which actually screws over Europe and Germany. People say I'm turning Democrats into Republicans and stuff like this. No, I'm trying to wake up Democrats and Republicans to the uniparty that has been running things. Every war, every coup that we do, there seem to be some natural resources that we are actually after, and Lindsey Graham just said it: there's $11 trillion in rare earth minerals under Eastern Ukraine. He blurts it out like his boyfriend's name on Valentine's Day."

President Biden has failed miserably to explain our national interest in the war in Ukraine. We are in Ukraine because it is in our national interest to give the Ukrainian military what they need to defeat Russia, because if Russia overran Ukraine, I have no doubt that it wouldn’t be too long before they cross a border where American service men and women would be required to go and fight.
