In the Wizard of Oz, the shot of Dorothy walking towards and opening the door was filmed in color on a set painted sepia toned and the Dorothy stand in wearing sepia clothes and make up. After she opens the door she moves out of frame and Judy Garland wearing the regular Dorothy clothes moves into frame. The use of Technicolor, a color film technology, allowed the filmmakers to create the vibrant and colorful world of Oz. The transition from black and white to color was a groundbreaking visual effect at the time and added to the magical experience of the film.

I give a lot of love to Spielberg for his blocking, but here's some really nice evolving blocking and staging from Robert Eggers and Jarin Blaschke, who, from my understanding, work closely together to conceive of these shots in prep. I love the Spielbergian use of depth and foreground-versus-background groupings relative to the camera. The simplicity of the camera staging also reminds me a bit of some of the staging in Gone with the Wind. Lots of really nice shots like this in this film, but this one really stood out for me in the theater. Another great bit of blocking, staging, and subtle camera movement in Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence to continually reshape this moving master shot. Arguably six unique compositions in one. What I always love about these shots is the way in which they are intentionally telling an evolving story. This film often uses perpendicularly connected room layouts to enable a number of these kinds of evolving shots. Love it. A.I. Kasparas Jakucionis is still one of my favorite players in the 2025 NBA Draft. I get the concerns over the drop off in his shot late in the year, but everything about his game screams that he's a pro. Jakucionis is one of the most versatile and creative on-ball creators in this class. His footwork, use of angles, balance, and change of pace is a nightmare for defenses to deal with. He showed dynamic shot making all year and was tremendous at the rim (61.8% on halfcourt layups). Don't overthink one of the most creative and malleable players in this draft.

Pop Muzik, by M (1979). This is quite an influential pop video and an unusual one. Director Brian Grant only had a budget of £2000, a single camera and one day for shooting in a tiny studio. He therefore decided to edit 'in the can' - filming and editing in the video camera at the same time. Each shot ends exactly on the beat to simplify the storyboard. Scenes are recorded with in-camera effects and blank spaces are left on the videotape so it can be rewound to add in more shots once the studio props have been moved. Perfect timing is essential and Grant had to be happy with each take before moving on to the next set up. The sparse, slightly robotic style became a bit of a New Wave staple and the fast shoot time was very cost efficiency for what could be an expensive process. Grant went on to direct videos for Queen, Duran Duran and Talk Talk among many others, but the innovative guerilla style of Pop Muzic still stands up.
