the fundamental problem is that 20 something fresh out of college social psych majors are supposed to evaluate which CS students are in the top 1% of their class in <5 minutes. impossible problem to solve. the EV (stakes) on missing a qualified applicant is too low. compare that to YC where missing a fund returner matters, you'll see why YC can afford the time of qualified admissions officers.

Stanley Zhong had a 4.42 GPA, a 1590 SAT, and ranked in the top 1% of the USA Computing Olympiad (Platinum). He built a free e-signing platform, reached the semifinals of Google Code Jam, and placed 2nd in MIT’s Battlecode. I hear literally nothing but facts “If systemic racism exists now, the 2 groups that it's against are white people and Asians. It's not happening to Black people” “Being Black in America in 2026 is one of the greatest things to ever happen to me. Jobs have diversity quotas, affirmative action in college — There's so much bending over backwards for the Black community and for the feelings of Black people. And during campaigns, it's all about how can we cater to the Black community. You are privileged to be Black in America now. But then when you look over at white people, it's like white people are constantly demonized. Constantly like, "Oh my gosh, I can't believe you said that. I'm not allowed to say that." If we're in such a racist country, why is it that Black people are able to say and do what they want, but white people feel like they can't? It's so hypocritical. But the Asians, the Asians are the ones that I'm surprised don't speak out on it more. 'Cause when you look at something like the SAT, the average Asian to go to the same school, the same program as a Black person has to score like 250 points higher on the SAT than a Black person” Everything is so true but it’s actually worse than he’s describing. Dr. King dreamed of a nation where Americans would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Not by race. Not by quotas. Not by identity politics. By character. Yet today, many on the left insist that every Black American must think the same, vote the same, and belong to the same political party. That would make Black Americans the only people in America expected to surrender their individual beliefs for the sake of racial solidarity. That is the opposite of Dr. King’s dream. Jason Arday shouldn’t be dead. But he is dead - because he didn’t tell the truth. And Cambridge University didn’t look for the truth - because he’s black. And fellow black professors didn’t ask for the truth - because he is black. Jason lied repeatedly. And he told the exact lies that allow one to excel in the system that elite universities have adopted. A system that factors in race, hardship, and lived experience under the banner of equity, instead of pure performance. Nearly everyone in these institutions ignored Jason’s lies, to try and protect black people. They called the people seeking the truth racists. Of course there were some racists. But the majority of people just wanted the truth. Avoiding the truth didn’t help black people. Double standards in academia aren’t helping black people. They hurt the perception of black people who are truly the best, and would have held prestigious positions at elite schools, solely off the merits of their performance. Double standards always backfire. Even when well intentioned. Even when intended to correct for past oppression. Race-conscious hiring and admissions have created a situation where it is rational to wonder whether a black person has achieved their position because they were simply the best, or because they were good enough, and black. This is not a racist thought. It’s a rational thing to wonder when a system promotes people based on race. It’s a thing I’ve wondered about myself, as someone who graduated from Harvard - which had race-conscious admissions. No amount of insistence that it’s racist will make it racist. It’s no more racist than it would be to wonder whether a white player got into the NBA off of just performance, if the NBA decided to focus on “fixing” the underrepresentation of white people. This is the logical downside of race-conscious hiring and admissions. You can think the downside is worth the upside. But the downside remains. Calling people with legitimate concerns racist didn’t protect black people. It didn’t protect Jason. It hurt black people who have earned their positions. And it allowed a troubled man who built his career on lies to rise to a height so great that his fall from grace killed him. We could have just had the truth. Instead, we have a tragedy.

And he told the exact lies that allow one to excel in the system that elite universities have adopted. A system that factors in race, hardship, and lived experience under the banner of equity, instead of pure performance. Nearly everyone in these institutions ignored Jason’s lies, to try and protect black people. They called the people seeking the truth racists. Of course there were some racists. But the majority of people just wanted the truth. Avoiding the truth didn’t help black people. Double standards in academia aren’t helping black people. They hurt the perception of black people who are truly the best, and would have held prestigious positions at elite schools, solely off the merits of their performance. Double standards always backfire. Even when well intentioned. Even when intended to correct for past oppression. Race-conscious hiring and admissions have created a situation where it is rational to wonder whether a black person has achieved their position because they were simply the best, or because they were good enough, and black. This is not a racist thought. It’s a rational thing to wonder when a system promotes people based on race. It’s a thing I’ve wondered about myself, as someone who graduated from Harvard - which had race-conscious admissions. No amount of insistence that it’s racist will make it racist. It’s no more racist than it would be to wonder whether a white player got into the NBA off of just performance, if the NBA decided to focus on “fixing” the underrepresentation of white people. This is the logical downside of race-conscious hiring and admissions. You can think the downside is worth the upside. But the downside remains. Calling people with legitimate concerns racist didn’t protect black people. It didn’t protect Jason. It hurt black people who have earned their positions. And it allowed a troubled man who built his career on lies to rise to a height so great that his fall from grace killed him. We could have just had the truth. Instead, we have a tragedy.

This intelligent young Black woman with Tourette’s Syndrome explains the incident at the BAFTAs and how Tourette’s affects the person living with the condition. Her race shouldn’t need mentioning, but unfortunately too many people have reacted emotionally to this situation and need a Black woman to explain why someone with Tourette’s who is white is not vocalising profanities toward Black people simply because they’re racist. Hey Jasmine… Black pilot here. I think you missed the plot. Then again, that’s becoming a pattern. I graduated from West Point. I went through Army flight school. I learned to fly the AH-64 Apache. I deployed to combat and flew 55 combat missions over Baghdad. Nobody handed me a cockpit because of my skin color. Nobody lowered the standards for me. Nobody looked at me and said, “Let’s check a diversity box.” That’s what people like you don’t seem to understand. Suggesting that Black pilots, Black engineers, Black doctors, or Black leaders need special preferences to succeed is not empowering, it’s insulting. I didn’t want a different standard. I wanted the same standard. And when you’re flying into combat, the American people don’t care what race the pilot is. They care whether the pilot is qualified. Merit isn’t racist. Excellence isn’t discriminatory. And reducing every achievement to skin color says far more about your worldview than it does about mine.
