A trader at Kumasi-Adum says that the traders take full responsibility for today's devastating fire incident at Adum and that the Ghana National Fire Service should not be blamed. According to her, the traders, including herself, have built structures in small spaces, congesting the area and making it inaccessible for firefighters, which led to the fire rapidly spreading to several structures and nearby buildings. She added that the firefighters did their best within their capacity.

Speaking to ZiFM Stereo News on the sidelines of a feedback meeting in Borrowdale, Ward 18 Councillor Rufaro Matsika said the mushrooming vending sites, particularly around Helensvale, Drew Road, Chisipiti, along highways and byways, and at private residences’ doorsteps, were eroding the character of the suburb, while residents feared this could leave homeowners nursing losses on investments built up over the years. She added that residents were not opposed to vending, since it has been a source of livelihood for many people trying to earn a living, but wanted trading to be properly regulated. “We now need to work together, the vendors, the residents and ourselves as the local authority, to see amicable ways of maybe trying to alleviate that,” Matsika said. In July, we shutdown trading at the Marabastad Retail Market because most of the traders were non-compliant. We were back at the market today for some good news. Trading has resumed. The City has worked with vendors to train them and to ensure they complied with by-laws. Traders have certificates of acceptability and first aid kits visible inside their stalls. They’ll all be issued with trading certificates. When we shutdown this market our intention was not to kill small businesses. Our objective is to ensure that businesses that operate in Tshwane do so lawfully in the best interest of the public. Along with MMC for Economic Development and Spatial Planning, Cllr Sarah Mabotsa, we are pleased with the work done by officials to turn this market around. City of Tshwane

We have identified three land parcels in Olievenhoutbosch that will be demarcated for use by registered South African informal traders. On 23 & 24 April 2026 our teams will be stationed at Olievenhoutbosch Community Hall to register informal traders and allocate trading space in the newly identified areas. Several vendors interviewed in the CBD said their priority is earning a living to support their families. One vendor said they were choosing to continue working, adding that they appreciated economic opportunities available to them and embraced the President's mantra, "Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo" ("A nation is built by its own people"). Harare Province Secretary for Security, Cde Ebson Dumburashe, said security services would be deployed to help maintain public order and ensure that people are able to go about their normal business. "It is business as usual, and we are here to ensure that people are not disturbed as they conduct their day-to-day businesses. The President is aware that many citizens earn their livelihoods through vending and public transport services. Law enforcement agencies and security services will be available to help maintain peace and respond to any incidents that may threaten public safety," he said. The happenings in the CBD earlier today were most unfortunate. This is not the way to treat Nairobians as we have continually implored our officers to treat Nairobians with Dignity. We have had cordial relations with informal traders for a year but lately there have been unfortunate incidences that seek to sabotage that. We will take disciplinary action. I have ordered the immediate release of all confiscated items, apologized to the traders and personally compensated each of them to the tune of 10,000 shillings each. Even if the traders were operating without the required documentation, including a Medical Certificate from Public Health that every food handler must have for the safety of Nairobians, they did not deserve such treatment and we are dealing with this internally.
